fhc window frames - now extinct
Discussion
well the 390 has gone to it's new home and i've aquired jim's fhc in part ex
lots of stuff to do but to be fair to jim it runs a treat
the window frames are dead and i think i read somewhere that they are no longer available so .....
does any one have any good ones ?
does anyone know any cars that have an identical H section used for the frames so i can repair the ones i've got ?
interesting styling on these cars !

The H section is acually formed from a flat strip that is crimped into that shape.
Never found any other car that uses the same section, however the Ford Sierra window glass has the same curvature.
On my FHC I used the galvanised channels from inside the Sierra door to replace the good bits of my Tasmin's channels (inside the door), then welded the section from inside the Tas door, outside... if you see what I mean

Maybe not. I quite like fiddling with the 390 engine - I think there is a massive amount of power in there, I just need to set the fueling up properly. I also recently read that if you change the headgaskets to composite you need to re-shim the rockers as the valve lift will be down by 1mm. Bearing in mind that a hi performance cam shaft has about 1mm more lift than standard the [350 FHC] engine should have a lot more power.

How does that work then?
Composite gasket will cure compression leakage into the valley - that should stop the oil blowing out! and lower compression ratio a bit.
The hydraulic tappets should take up the extra thickness of the gasket but they rob the cam of lift when the spin it too fast since the oil froths in the tappet.
I should leave well alone if you ever intend to drive it.
There is NO power in there if you louse it up.
Mark.
I agree. I was talking about two different cars though!
I'm used to the Alfa solid bucket and shim system. So how do hydraulic tappets not keep the valves open all the time then? Do they just rub on the cam all the time? . And what about tappet pre-load - whats that all about then?

i was going to try and explain tappet preload and how lifters lock and bleed but read this and if you don't get it i'll have a go at explaining

This site explains what incorrect pre load does.

Apparently no preload can damage the lifters, and too much will loose power. so what is the point of having them again??? with the mechanical ones, you just loose a bit of power as stuff wears out until you re-shim.

the point of having them is so you don't have to arse about with shims ! (not totally true but mostly)
having the preload slightly wrong won't give a huge loss of power - having the preload wound too tight would mean less than zero clearance - you would definately know if that was the case as the engine would be dead in pretty short order.
lots of modern stuff doesn't have preload on the lifters the range of travel is enough each way and the slack is just taken up by preasure.
