Wedge cuts out when clutch pedal down???

Sounds like an electrical problem to me. See if you have a voltage drop between the engine block and the battery earth.

I had a similar problem that turned out to be cause by the erk who installed my immobiliser. After I'd sorted out all the dry joints from wires just twisted together and taped over I found it was still a bit intermittant, and eventually traced to the fact that the control unit was earthed to the steering column but that was only earthed indirectly, if memory serves it was via the rack and front suspension and up the brading on the brake hoses, and via th throttle cable. Neither of these made particularly good earths funnily enough and the unit kept resetting itself. Right as rain once I earthed the steering column (and remade all the dry joints).

Try wedging something under the clutch pedal, so it can't go all the way down, and then pushing the pedal with the same force that induces the fault. Should help point you in the direction of the fault.
