what steering wheel fits alternatively on a 280 wedge?

Hi micha, what steering wheel and centre hub do you have fitted at the moment?
Does your 280 have the Rover SD1 steering column?
I have just discovered that changing the steering wheel is not as simple as I thought!
My 350 has a 'personal' wheel and hub fitted. I wanted to fit a momo wheel with a sparco quick release attachment, but found that the six bolt fixing is not only rotated through 90 degrees but that the spacings are different as well.
The personal wheel / hub, has two of the six bolts at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions, and centre spacings of 74mm between opposite bolts / 37mm between adjacent bolts.
The momo and sparco six bolt fixing has two of the six bolts at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, with spacings of 70mm between opposite bolts / 35mm between adjacent bolts.
I have tried everywhere I can think of to get a hub that will fit the rover SD1 splines and the momo / sparco six bolt spacings but failed.
Mountney and Motolita can supply a hub to fit the splines but only with bolt fixings for a 'traditional' steering wheel (they cannot tell me what the bolt spacings are, only that modern wheels like momo and sparco won't fit). Just about everyone can supply a hub that will fit the momo / sparco six bolt fixing (usually referred to as 'M' range) but not one that is compatible with the Rover splines!
Halfords list a hub for ALL pre 1999 TVR's that is suitable for 'M' range steering wheels, but I don't believe that ALL pre 1999 TVR's used the same steering column, so how can that be?

I'm not sure you can rely on anything being 'standard' on a Wedge!
i think its from a TR7, capri-gt looks similar too. its dished, has 3 spokes with holes in it. the center of the wheel (where its fixed on the hub) is squarish and hold by three M5 or M6 screw on the hub. the hub has a dovetail-connexion and is hold by a big nut on the steering shaft.
on mine the leather came of...the rest of the steering wheel is ok.

micha, I'm sad to say I can't be much help on this one. Perhaps another 280 owner may be able to suggest what wheel you have. The reference books I've checked show a very deep dished wheel with a round boss that covers up the fixing bolts but no detail of what make it or what fixing it uses.
I believe TVR fitted a lot of 'Astrali' steering wheels to earlier cars but this company seems to have stopped trading last year.
Your best bet may be to look at Mountney's 'Traditional' range of wheels to see if any of those appeal to you, they do a hub to fit the SD1 splines.
