Alternator-serviceable or just replaceable``

Hi All,

Just had a wee little embarrasment at the local optimax motion lotion filler station....jumped in and 'CLICK'

Oh poo....luckily a RAC man was there and tested her for me. Shes got no charge so i need a new alternator.

Can i get new brushes or should i just get another one?

I assume its a standard rover V8 unit? I know 'standard' part and TVR are a usual NO NO but surely this must be???!!!

You can have it overhauled.
If not charging would suspect the diode-pack. But while at it replace the brushes as well.
There are several versions available, but not too many so it is possible to get a right one, and the drive belt pulley needs to be correct. If you take one with higher output your battery needs to be able to handle that (check battery amp specification and it should be equal or higher than that of the alternator).

Get it overhauled.
Much more cost effective than buying new and you don't have the added worrys of "is it the right one?" or "is it going to fit?"

Rebuild can be done for around £40
Quite a few turn up on ebay too, so why not grab a spare for the shelf to bolt in when the other is away being fixed?

Looks like servicing then! Also it looks like a really easy job to do! The last car i changed an alternator on was a clio 16v (williams) and its under the inlet manifold! Took all day!!!
