Went out for one of my first runs in my wedge on Saturday, stopped off for a break for an hour, then set off again, right away I had to blast past a tractor, then I noticed in my rear view, there was a load of smoke coming from my rear end, I started to slow down to pull over then it started to smoke from the bonnet, oil was burning, but where was it coming from, I put a photo up to see if guys any ideas? I got it recovered to Fernies as i was close to them, so they could fix it and give it a once over since I bought it not long ago, hopefully find out soon. In the pic it shows a bit of oil at the bottom of the cover, there was also a puddle on the bodywork around the oil fulter.

Any guesses?

Loose oil filter?

3 seconds to tighten it.

I had this once on a Jeep - clouds of oil behind me - just after a service too. Idiots.

Good oil pressure when it was smoking? Coolant temp normal? Had a similar experience with my 400SE, it was the oil hose split coming from the filter

You may want to ask them to sort your handbreak out at Fernies while its there, can't belive they sold it to you like that.

There's a lot of oil on the rocker cover lip so would have thought it would be higher up than the rocker cover gasket.

Hey up! Just got back in!
I may buy a drink for the correct guesser at the BBWF in a couple of weeks biggrin
I thought it may be the rocker cover gasket as oil is all in the area but strangely higher up the cover as well!? The filter did seem tight, if it is that, at least I get the bay steam cleaned and everything else checked over, and the handbrake as you say Leigh, it was a private sale (just wanted to make that clear). My wife is somewhat bemused by it's phalic like position hehe
I was originally going to get it recovered to my local garage who services a couple of tivs but thought it nice to get it all checked over by Fernies so soon after me buying it, and as it was in the area.

I did funnily enough check the readings on the journey previous in the day, I was trying to explain to the missus what she should keep an eye out for, while I was watching the road! The oil pressure was a third of the way up cant remember the number now (3 maybe?) frown I did think it strange a little but thought it may have a different max point on the gauge to my other car. But the oil pressure light only came on at low revs which seemed familiar from the Tuscan also, so thought it was ok. Oil temp seemed fine too, 3 quarters of the way up the notch before red line

....the engine was ticking over fine by the way, before I turned it off

.....Is the rocker cover gasket a common thing to go?

The cork gaskets are common to fail, and even leak when new. rimmer Bro's do rubber ones that are a nice upgrade and dont leak.

Best just clean as much off every thing then run then engine with the bonnet up and see if you can see where it's comming from. should not be too hard as it looks like its leaking a lot,

You can allways manualy rev it from under the bonnet to get the presure up.

Let is know what you find, and good luck.

Judging by the pool of oil around the rocker box breather, check to see if the grey cartridge O ring is ok and the unit is hand tight, and also check that the breather hose is ok, hope you get it sorted
PS Beer tokens for advise on this forum!!!! It's going to cost you a fortune!

Is the carter ventilation ok? If not it can cause all sorts of oil related things. Breather on one of the rocker covers can be blocked, and there is a hose.

I think I'll need to give out a few beer token's myself for all the help I've been given over these weeks.

Well I got my wedge back, all healthy smile Great for Fernies to do it at such short notice. They never steam cleaned the engine bay it as it buggers up the electrics they told me, so its time to get my toothbrush and gunk out!

Only thing I was a little unsure of was when I got back in, I was taking the yellow tag off my key ring and on the tag, the make read "TVR" but the model read "biguglyredthing"! frown colour "RED!"

I wonder if I can have them for slander hehe

Your just have to do the other stuff yourself.

Also remember to check the oil as you may have lost a lot.

And yes steam cleaning is not allways the best Idea on a tempermental car.

Cheersa Leigh, oh he put 1.5 litres of oil in it too.

Gotta find more time to do all this stuff frown

He said the handbrake wasn't a simple adjustment job, 2 hour labour job on the rear brake discs, not sure exacly what but will get there eventually!

I'd agree with 20 mins,
only takes 5 mins once you have it in the air and the wheels off.

Turn the hand break caliper screw till its tight then back of 90 - 180 degress so you can get the so you can get the split pin in, do this on both sides.

be even quicker with a ramp as you don't have to take the wheels off.
