Sadly, when someone sells a car, sometimes its because theres a few tough jobs coming up and they cant be arsed to get them done, and so "upgrade".

Basically when you get thru the list (y'know, the list that you've never seen and cant know whats on it...) of jobs, it'll be fine and you'll get the payback in terms of enjoyment.

To be fair to Jim, though, the fuel pump thing wasn't a problem when he sold it. Maybe it's that Canadian sandy fuel? ;^) Lucas he no likey.

If you are going though fuel pump's that quick, I'll check the swirl pot has a filter in it, and make sure it's not come loose.

Or maybe fit a pre-filer before the fuel pump.

There's a filter just before the pump and one after.

The guy who sold it to me made good on the 90 day warrantee and is replacing it with a new unit, not rebuilt. biggrin

BTW, what's the swirl pot for?

I just checked my mail... brand spanking new FP arrived. I noticed on the box the model of Jag it's from, so I'm going to post that here so a) you can find one in the wrecker's yard or b) can order one using this info.

Apparently a 390 FP is from a: XJ6 1980-87 OR XJS 1976-91

I hope this info helps someone someday.

If the tank is bottom feeding and you don't run it dry, where would the air come from?

Where do they sell 13 mm pre-filters.

Also all wedge fuel swirl pots have one built in.

I haven't taken apart my "swirl" pot yet, but the rattly bit in mine(screen) probably is pretty gross - keeping out only the big chunks. There isn't much swirling going on, what with the pipes entering at 90 degrees straight into the top. A true swirl pot will have the entry pipes on the sides, hugging the walls, inducing the fluid to spin, toilet style. Any air escapes out the top thru the small vent, dropping back into the saddle tank. I think of this tank as more of a collection pot, where right and left tanks tend to feed this reservoir whether in left or right turns. It's not a good thing to let the pump run dry - it needs the lube and the cooling.

For my 280i with the 100PSI pump, I learned the hard way that a small disc type 40 micron screen type filter jest before the pump was a bad idea. I have a thread on this several days ago. A bit of research yielded others who had similar problems, caused by the filter being too small and aerating the fuel. Aerated fuel does nasty things to the pump; inducing cavitation and basically hammering the pucks in the rotor as the bubbles go thru.

The perfect filter is a 100 micron stainless screen type and it must have sufficient area. The cartridge will be approx 5" long and 2" in dia. Several outfits make them for around $80 to over $100 (sorry, didn't convert). I found a very cheap source (unfortunately in the states) for 1/2 of that: see EBay Filter

A filter with 10-AN fittings is perfect for the 5/8" hose and there's a standard cheap adaptor from male 10-AN to hose barb.

In reality I think the swirl pot acts as more of a 'reservoir' so when the fuel is swishing about the tanks you don't get a situation where there is no petrol feeding the pump.
I would think that on cars that are now 20+ years old there is going to be some rust etc in the tanks. Maybe cleaning out the tanks, fitting a new swirl pot and pre filter would be a good idea.
Fitted one of these on mine http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDeta...
