On my 390SE the heater box has a circular inlet stub that pokes through a matching (well, not really, until I put inch foam over it with an interference fit with the stub...) hole in the bulkhead. Hence the air path goes from my feet(!!), thru a hole in the bulkhead, thru the cavity between the bulkhead and that black moulding on the back on the engine bay, back thru the bulkhead to cabin side, and into the heaterbox via the foam sealing ring i made.
Hope that makes sense...

P.S. The clock on the old style dash tends to push the heaterbox out of place so it doesnt match up with the dash vents, as it tries to occupy the same space as the heater box. Hence, on old style dash cars, the demister performance can be DISMAL.
