Steering Bulkhead Bush Info
Discussion
Had to get the car MOTd last week prior to running it at Wiscombe Hillclimb on the weekend. It failed on the bulkhead bush (early Tasmin column), so from a thread on this site I looked up the article shown on wedge pages. Brilliant fix, the supplier shown still stocks the part and it only took 1.5 hours to fit. Saved my whole weekend, and has made a world of difference to the feel of the steering. Total cost £13, what a bargain.
I fitted this to a ford columned 350 - the column was triangular. I presume the bush we are talking about is the one that surrounds the column as it goes out of the bulkhead into the wheel recess.
The one I removed had a part number - and I'm pretty sure it was Scorpio/granada. Andrew page put the part number in their computer and had one on site... Cost - about 3 quid.
Took 30 mins to fit and what a transformation! steering much better with zero play. What happens is that the bush has 3 plastic edges that grip one side each of the triangular column. In my case they had just worn down.
Hope this helps

The bearing I fitted is the one on the pixeltechnology site, as described by Kevin Tolley. I obtained it as he did from RS Components using the part number quoted. The steering column I believe is TR7 (spit) with a round profile which fits perfectly within the inner part of the bearing assembly. My car is a 1982 Tasmin with the 2.8i engine. I am afraid I do not know which parts fit the later cars.
For matt-mans 400SE it was the grey plastic - triangular bearing.
Ford partnumbers F7042536, and F6121994, F1650936, F1568136
They come as a set, but have seperate partnumbers. Total cost £3.31p (last year)
its a very basic affair, but easy to fit.
Remove the carpet in the drivers footweel, see 4 bolts/nuts. Spanner inside and under wheel arch. remove front wheel, steering shaft has a couple of bolts with lock tabs - remove which lets the shaft swing free. Old bearring will slip over now. Put in new bearing etc, do up the steering bolts WITH LOCK TABS!!! - you dont want those coming loose!
About an hour.

Looking at that procedure - also get two lengths of old bicycle inner tube. Slip them over the steering shaft when it's apart. When it's all back together and you have tested it position each tube over each steering UJ. Fill each with grease and tie-wrap the ends.
The UJ's will now last forever.
