8 degrees would be a static setting which is roughly what you'll get at idle with the vacuum disconnected. That doesn't sound like very much advance - are you getting a lot of mechanical advance on the dizzy?

Depends on how hot the Cam is. My 390 (crane cam) is supposed to have about 8 BTDC at 850RPM with no vac. The Wedge bible reckons that the RV8 is pretty relaxed about timing, so unless its horribly out, you shouldnt have a problem. I once drove mine with the dissy one TOOTH too far advanced (Steady!! its easily done!!) and whilst accelerating had to be done VERY gently, it didnt pink (like I said, STEADY acceleration).

Went a lot better after I sorted it...

If its running too lean, this can cause pinking at fairly standard advances. If its not going too well, put it on the rollers for a tuneup.
