Thanks guys for all the suggestions to cure this on-going loss of power above 2.5k revs.

Changed nearly everything now including:

  • Dizzy + amp (new)
  • Coil
  • rotor arm
  • leads
  • dizzy cap
  • throttle pot
  • temp sensor
AFM checks out ok.

Only thing not replaced is the Fuel computer so I don't suppose anyone has one that I could borrow to eliminate it as we are now running out of ideas?

Checked all compression readings and all are close to each other so we do not suspect the cam

I may put a new fuel pump on as I do not know the history or condition.

Anything that I have missed guys?

Cheers

Chris

Possible the fuel filter / pump as well, as happenend to mine recently, would idle but not move car or rev above 3k. So maybe your filter is not as blocked as mine was if you are still running?

A bit of a long shot, are the exhaust OK? I've had similar symptoms on another car and the exhaust was blocked and couldn't breathe.

Simple thing I did after a good sugestion was to fit a bulb across the fuel pump. It proves the feed to the pump, not the pump mind you but at least I know the leccy is there. Brought it through a fused wire to underneath the dash. I can pop a bulb on when I think there may be an issue. Take it off after as I find its distracting.

Thanks for the info / advice

Will try the pump / filter next, it is working but whether it is enough pressure above 2.5k revs needs to be proved I guess.
Injectors all fine as they were cleaned ultrasonically 1k miles ago. Plugs replaced with new NGK ones along with the complete ignition system now!

We are going to take the exhaust off a just test that as well. Will let you know what the outcome is shortly

Thanks agn fellas

If it does this on a static test too on the drive then it's easy to connect a fuel pressure gauge and check it at say 3k revs.

Apart from the pump/filter I suppose a failing fuel pressure regulator could give trouble.

Thanks guys ... couple of questions:

What pressure should I expect at 2 - 3k revs?
Does anyone know the part number or replacement for the pump and filter

Thanks

Chris

I got my filter from Halfrauds of the shelf for a 3.5 V8 Rover - part number HFF210, exact same saize and type as one I took off @ £12 or so
Old pump has markings that say Lucas 4FP, the one I put on was a SAGEM 4FP but got this of ebay a few years ago so don't know how much

Good luck smile

Have you checked all of the ignition low voltage supply lines? have a VERY close look at the wiring where it goes across the top of the engine. It'll all be cracked & knackered under the sheething.

Thats my bet

Well spent another day on the car with fuel filter - fuel pump - pressure valve all changed and ....

No change!furious

So in summary and after £1000 spent:

All the ignition system has been replaced (dizzy - leads - rotor - coil - plugs - Volt Amp)
Throttle pot changed
All the fuel system changed (pump - filter - pressure valve)all injectors working and firing)
Resister pack changed
Temp sensor changed
Fuel computer checked - ok
AFM checked - ok
Electrics general - all earths and continuity checks done

So car going in the lockup banghead until next year ..

Chris, that's not a very good check of the cam, there might be one or more lobes part-worn, you'd still get reasonable compression but a drop-off in power. To be safe have a look at the rocker lift while turning the engine over (4th gear - rotate a back wheel).

Easy start is handy for finding air leaks also.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I foresaw this happening on my car after non start and decided my next £1000 would be spent on a carb conversion/mallory conversion. Car has been transformed with the knowledge that future fault finding will be so much easier along with the added performance package. Give RPi a call if you're still stuck.
