I've a 1987 350i and have a problem in that if I catch the underside of the clutch pedal with my (size 12) foot, there is nothing to stop it swinging forwards. If it does so, the rod which transmits the thrust from the pedal to the master cylinder can pull right out, and more than once has seen me at the front of a queue on my hands and knees trying to shove it back in again.

So - what is supposed to retain it? The clutch itself seems fine.

Hi Mark,
The pushrod screws into the clevis/nut that is attached to the pedal, and to secure it in there, there should be a locknut to tighten up to the clevis/nut.

The rod is nice and secure on the pedal, but there's just a rubber boot at the other end of it! The cylinder end of the rod has a dome formed on it to mate with the piston, and the boot is nice and snug round the rod, but a good tug would pull the boot off or pull the rod through it, especially if the boot was old and rotten.
Perhaps you need to develop a better clutch technique...? wink

You might be missing the circlip that prevents the dome from parting company with the m/c. If you look under the boot it might be lodged in there.

Perhaps your clodhoppers pulled it right out the first time!

There should be a ridge just inside the m/c bore for the circlip to engage into.

Yes...I thought someone would as soon as I had typed the title! :-)

The rod is securely attached to the pedal itself; it sounds like I just need a new rubber. Sounds nice and cheap, for once!

Thanks everyone.

If its that end of the rod then you may need a new clutch cylinder to get a new circlip wouldnt you/he? or will the circlip come with the repair kit which the rubber will too, doubt you can get that on its own?

You can probably buy circlips from _good_ hardware shops, it would need to be slightly bigger than the bore, if too big you could probably file the ends till it fit.

Well, to cut a long story short, I eventually ended up fitting a new master cylinder from TVRcarparts.com. It then transpired that the one I had before had a different thread for the hydraulic pipe nut. I rang Neil at TVR car parts, and 3 days later one appeared gratis in the post! I ran a Jensen Healey before and although I suppose that parts people tend also to be enthusiasts, I've never known anyone do that before. Splendid.

What's more, the car is coming together now. Is it nearly summer yet?
