Got All my new shock's from SH now.

Fitting coil overs to a wedge in place of the standard damper and separate large diameter ( cortina) springs can be done without modding the chassis, but it puts huge loads in places that were not meant to have them and the chassis and wishbones will quickly break.
We went through all that converting the racers...
To it coil overs properly you need to strengthen and modify the chassis and the wishbones. I have some pictures somewhere of what happens if you dont !!!
One thing to look at if your fiddling with your suspension is to check where the suspension turrets on the front are welded into the chassis. They car tear out even on a road car. My racer did it at lydden Hill and the wheelbase ended up 1.5 inches longer on one side !!!!

Full details are on his site.

I will not post pics of the brackets,
But I passed he details on to somone in the USA and they bought just the brackets off him, these will allow you to fit coilover shocks to the front and rear.
Not sure on the price but im sure it will be ok.
Pic from his site that shows how they look (springs are yellow.)

Can you look at the why SH has done it and give us you views. as far as I know he has used this method without chassis work, and used it on sprints and hill climbs with no problems. We went through all that converting the racers...

To be honest Graham, the Taz racers were running spring rates that are far in excess of what a road car would do and I saw how much kerbing was being used all of which far exceeds the stress that a road car will see. We went through all that converting the racers...

The main reason why there is a lot of stress/damage is the shocks do not pivot correctly and try and twist the mounts out of place rather than pivot correctly. The brackets I developed allow the shocks to move and also distribute the stress on the wishbones. I was running these setup on the 520SE for several years on my car without any problems. BTW it was quicker round Lydden than the Tazs were so I wasn't exactly pussyfooting it. Also the car was driven to events so the suspension had a lot of road and track miles under its belt.

Steve Lewis (the man behind the Taz Challenge) and I swapped a lot of notes about this when the series first started. We are neighbours so it wasn't difficult and had started sprinting together. I had gone coil over before the series had started and he wanted to know if I had seen any problems that the tas racers were. The long and the short of it was no but and this was a big but, the spring rates and amount of abuse that the race cars experienced, particular when kerbed, was way way higher than I was seeing.
There are also restrictions IIRC with the regs that also prevented some mods but these got changed pretty quickly.

Not quite true... They would have liked to buy the brackets but I can't ship anything to the US because of the crazy US liability laws. My insurers simply will not let me. I also won't ship the brackets on their own because they are designed around a particular shock and spring setup that I know works well. https://delta.securesslhost.net/~shenglt/catalog/i...

Is this pic an optical illusion or does the damper look like it's going to have no compression travel left once it's down on the ground at normal running height? from the angle of the driveshaft and lower A arm it looks like the limited compression travel the damper seems to have will all be used up ..? Presumably it's an optical illusion.https://delta.securesslhost.net/~shenglt/catalog/i...

Ok sorry I thought you had sorted somthing out for him. I can understand about the crazy US liability laws.trackcar said:

I think the design is such that the damper is at mid travel when the suspension is at normal ride height. It would get a bit bumpy otherwise

Bit of an illusion as the bump stops have slid down so only a little bit of chrome is shown. The piccy is also off a sprint setup I was using where I was playing round with spring combinations so not totally representative.

Steve,
If you've still got your ears on buddy
A quick question about ride height.
For standard road setup is the bottom wishbone meant to be parallel to the ground when the car is static? The question applies to both ends of the car by the way
If not then you can guess what my next question is...
