Yep. Hillman Avenger. Rare automatic model with 2/3rds vinyl roof. The roof rack was for my surf board....maaan. Wish I still had it but unfortunately a mate of mine literally drove it up a tree!! He never told me he'd never driven a car beforeyikes

Pimptastic metal-flake paint job there Richard... my dad did quite a few of those for his customers in the mid-late 70s biggrin

About the only way you could 'modify' your family saloon back then of course, unlike the myriad of shiite that you can buy for modern cars rolleyes
At least paint didn't add any significant weight... hehe AND you could still identify the car underneath! Though I was tempted to say Hillman Hunter when I first saw your pic. - or even that Chrysler thing that was around at the same time!
Alloy wheels were still rare as hen's teeth (especially on mainstream production cars: even the aftermarket was restricted to a few makes such as Minilite - a lot of the '8-spokes' a la Carlos Fandango were usually steel!)

My first job was working on the Avenger engine development - and it certainly needed it. The combustion process was so slow that the only effect of increasing valve lift was to stir up the cylinder mixture. Nonetheless, there were some good ones; the best of which was a BRM engined version of 2 litres with twin overhead cams and close on 200 bhp. Exiting times!

This probably own't work; usually when I try to link to Photobox all you get is 'image not available' unless I'm logged on there at the same time... confused

My first (TVR) wedge anyway... 11 (or is it 12) years ago yikes

ETA: the lipstick pink of the top pic is more like the actual colour on the car!

He he. Found this. My first car. Trying to do a bit of impromptu rallying and the exhaust came off with the aid of a chuffing great rock. Don't know who the lanky one is........ Or how the heck he fitted in that!

Avenger, a classic motor....

when I was on my year out in southampton ( gulf war one year) I bought a talbot avenger 1.6ls off a guy at work. he'd rearended someone with it damaging the grill and bumper. he then got a new grill, trial fitted it and forgot to put the bonnet down. which soon came up and hit the roof !!!

his missus said get rid of it... so for the sum of 25 quid... ( with a full tank of fuel that was worth considerably more and 60 months tax !!!!) i got an avenger with 30k miles on it, The vinyl roof was a bit scabby so he'd taken it off, but the interior was imaculate..

I changed the original oil and air filters and it went from 18mpg to 30 !!!! and used a couple of bonnet pins to hold the bonnet down and kicked the dent out of the roof. I ran it for two years before selling it sans mot or tax for 250 quid......

The white night, zero cool points but a cool car all the same... I do miss that motor...

G
p.s. as a matter of interest

I've bought one car soon after its bonnet had come up, and I had a jago samuri and a mini that both broke bonnet catches twice on each car and the bonnets came up !!!!!

maybe thats why I ended up with tvrs that hinge at the Front !!!!!
