I got a new set of T1-R's fitted last June/July and since then I've had slow air leak from each tyre, it either takes a couple of weeks to go down or a lot of miles. Last weekend I eventually took it back to who fitted my tyres, telling them the wheels maybe pitted as they dont hold their air, but he came back to me, confidently telling me all the valves are faulty and need special valves which they can't get. Is this true? Are they special type of valve? or is that smell getting stronger!? If they are a special type where can I get them. They don't appear to look any different to a normal valve to me.

I assume that you kept the original steel valves, rather than change them? You should be able to tell where the leaks originate with some soapy water.

I think with age the seals in those valves can leak, and the valves themselves can corrode inside the wheel. In addition, did the tyres deflate prior to changing them?

When I changed tyres on mine about a year ago I decided on rubber valves, albeit slightly shorter. Why not try just replacing the actual valve mechanism with a new one, to check sealing? (i.e. the bit that unscrews from the centre).

Hey Paul!

I had new tyres all round when i bought my wedge and always had problems with them losing air, quite quickly in fact! I had to pump them up every week and they had ofton gone down to about 8 psi after a few days to rest!!!

I refurbed my wheels last winter, so all tyres were off but 2 needed changing anyway, and expected to see the bead inside the rim to be crappy and peeling off but far from, looked good all round!

New metal bolt in valves, about a fiver each i seem to remember...they had them in stock so even better news!

Now, i have absolutly no leaks what so ever!

If you have problems finding some i can drop in to the garaage and find out where they get them from....im sure they are normal size tho???

Thanks Paul, Thanks Matt, Just like you said Matt, I got new tyres as soon as I bought the car and fill them as often as I fill my petrol tank really frown
Still not sure exactly what type, I've had a look on Demon Tweeks but not sure exactly which ones as there wasnt an obvious one to pick from, I didnt get in til late last night so couldnt do a leak test as you describe Paul. I cant understand why the garage say they are special ones if you say I can replace them with rubber ones too confused!

Funnily enough my local tyre place suggested that my after market shiny caps were to blame for issues in removing the valve. The bit you push in to let the air out and the bit they just unscrew to let the air out. They had quite a problem due to the deformed edge extracting the old one, sort of started and got stuck. Fortunately the new one went in with little fuss. So now I use the ordinary ones.

Another tyre place just had not cleaned the rims properly when the tyre was off.

Cheers Leigh,
So what this guy in the garage on about, being "special ones" needed? Whats different from a normal car wheel & tyre to these? (obviously not considering the sunken ones)

I looked at the flush mount ones, and even on the 8.5" rims on the rear of my car, they didn't quite seat properly inside the wheel. Way out on the 8" rims.

One of the Guys at BBWF2006 somthing 400 had them fitted.
The other option would be to use the orignals but with new rubber seals.
