Just got a spare ecu is there anything i should or should not be doing. Or is it just a case of unplug and plug spare straight in.

I've always just "plugged and played" with ECUs - just make sure it is the same type.
Its probably worth making sure your keys are out of the ignition before you swap them over.

Also - try to stop the car and engine first, rather than fiddling about in the passenger footwell at 100mph....
