Any advice greatfully recieved. My 350I has suddenly become VERY thirsty (14 to the gallon) & before you ask Im not thrashing her any more than usual!Ive swapped the temp sensors & checked for leaks.other symptoms are she goes through phases of either stalling all the time or kangarooing on overrun.

Hi Clive,

No luck with my sensor's then.

you could try cleaning the throttle pot.

I would also check the connections to the flapper and ecu are seated correctly, as maybe some readings arn't being sent / received properly ?

Do you perhaps have an infamous adjustable raising rate fuel pressure regulator. It could be that the pressure in the fuel rail is much too high, and perhaps could cause this.

High fuel pressure can also be caused by a restricton in the return line.

It's possible that the engine temp sensor you put on is also duff, or it's actually the wiring that's at fault.

How do the plugs look - really black?

Plugs are v sooty it runs v rich.I have disconnected the cold stat injector. How do I check if it is a "variable pressure regulator"?

If it's an adjustable it'll be a Webber or FSE, with some means of adjustment (sorry for stating the obvious) such as a screw / bolt head in one end.

"Suddenly" indicates either a specific wiring or component fault. An open circuit connection to the temp sensor (checked as OK?) will make the engine run rich and stall, and it may run erratically. Worn throttle pot will cause unwanted acceleration enrichment with erratic running, it may also cause stalling. Kangarooing on overun is due to excess fuel condensed on the walls of the plenum chamber evaporating under the high vacuum conditions of overun causing random fuel ignition with the limited amount of air available. The alternation between stalling and kangarooing is probably dependent upon inlet manifold temperature. Check your wiring and throttle pot back at the ECU connector as indicated in the component descriptions here:

Might be worth taking the air filter off to check it hasn't collapsed on the inside and blocked up the air intake even if it looks OK on the outside.
