Newbie help - Engine Records & Engine Cams
Discussion
Newbie wedge owner here, so thought Id best say hello before picking your brains!!
I persuaded my dad to return to trevor ownership again when I heard of a local 390SE that needed a new home; its his fourth TVR so you'd of thought he would of learnt by now!
The car is an early trailing arm 390SE in a lovely 80's gold (must find the colour out as well). Needs the usual outriggers and such sorting, but its main problem is the oil pump gave up and has damaged the engine. We took the engine out this weekend and its now in bits, well and trully knackered, so it will be getting a full rebuild over the next few weeks. No doubt I'll have loads of questions but heres my first couple.
Normal engines were delivered to TVR from rover and then worked upon as necessary. As this engine was tweaked by Andy Rouse Engineering it gets a unique ARE-TVR engine number on the plate in the engine compartment. Is there anyone who has access to the engine records who can correleate that ARE number to the engine number as this looks like a standard rover number, 30A03-------, thats stamped on the block. An educated guess is that TVR had rover lumps shipped to Andy Rouse for machining rather than doing them in house, hence the different engine numbers, but why the ARE number isnt stamped on the block is a mystery. The cosworth pistons are in there and the head has slightly larger than normal valves so it all points to it being the original lump. Any help apprecaited.
Final question for now, what cams are people fitting on rebuild?? This one has a Piper cam in it and it is well shot. Its taken 30thou off the lifters its that worn!! Im thinking a fast road setup from Crane, any thoughts??
Apologies for the lengthy scribe, but I hope someone can help.
Thanks in anticipation

Sounds like you know what you are doing..
This cam table may be useful :

Also worth calling V8 developments and discuss cam - as it really depends on who drives the car and the required driving characteristics..

Thanks, only rebuilt 4 v8's over the years so still a novice really.
Dont like Kent cams, used them before in both a v8 and in a ford 4pot before now and it didnt do what I wanted. Cheers for the tip on V8 developments tho, will give them a call and see what they have to say.
Any clues on the engine numbers, anyone??
