The rear shocks (currently Spax) are past salvaging on our 390 so the questions are:-

1. What have people fitted?
2. How do you rate them?
3. Where did you buy them from and how much?

Thanks

Nick

Ive got Nitrons currently on the racer, but they're knackered....I managed to find another set of Nitrons that are nearly new £100

Not on the car yet though

Ive heard good things about nitrons and avos on the track, and good things about protech (sp?) and Gaz on the road

I'm fitting the AVO dual adjustables to my "barn find" 1984 Tasmin. I have Spax on my 1987 280i.

Depends on what you want to spend.

The adjustable avo's I fitted a long time ago was cheap, and did make a lot of difference, but I got a set of SH fully adjustable coil overs. but not fitted yet.

Also got Nirtrons on the Race car, but not drove this yet.

most people say though you get what you pay for.

Standard adjustables are about £150 a set
SH coil over ones are £275 inc springs
New Nitrons are about £600 inc Springs

Do you mind me asking what kind of money the Avos were??

Excuse my ignorance, but what is/are SH???

The car was bought to be refurbed then used mainly for track days. Racing is too expensive these days and track days offer my value for money but still a lot of fun.
The refurb has now turned inot a full body off restoration with a conversion from trailing arm to A frame/wishbone at the rear, so I dont have the money (or need) for Nitrons.

SH = Steve Heath
see https://delta.securesslhost.net/~shenglt/catalog/i...
They are Gaz shock's but are coil overs, and come with conversion brackets.

I had avo's and they rusted really badly over 3 year's.

I've replaced them with Gaz Golds which are much better built.

There are coil overs and coilovers. The standard coilovers are not really proper coilovers as the top of the spring fits over a lip on the suspension turret. As a result, there is a problem with the shock pivoting as the suspension goes up or down and twisting the spring. Not a very good situation, especially when the car is pushed hard. The problem is made worse by the fact that the shock doesn't pivot either and simply forces a rubber bush out of shape to give some movement. End result is the shock and spring fight each other and twist. Not good for the suspension. The other issue is that the standard setup causes the drive shaft to operate out of the UJs sweet spot and this is why they break so frequently. The SH coilover set uses a special conversion bracket that allows the shock to pivot correctly. It also restricts the movement so that the UJs are kept in the sweet spot and generally smooths things over.

As for the A frame conversion. Not totally convinced it is that straightforward as the chassis were quite different. You may also need to change the hub carriers as well as I don't think they are interchangeable. Nothing that money and time can't solve but not a straightforward weld some brackets on task either. I don't know of any of the Tasmin racers actually converted which tells you something.

The main reason the Racers did not do it, it was because it was not allowed in the rules, one the tasmin challenge got merged with the TVR Tuscan Challenge, the rules was changed, and Joo's did a lot of mods to CJ's car.

Can't remember the price .. about £250 I think but call them for the current price.

Jules is also worth calling - as he is a bit of a wizard with the old spring / shock combo..

Ditto - Steve Heath.
