FRONT
Ive done a search and found the Mintex part number for the pads to fit the AP 4 pots, but has anyone bought any mintex pads for the standard Grandad calipers?? Ive got an 1985 390SE (so does that make them slightly larger ones than a normal 350i??) with vented discs and cant afford/dont need to upgrade to 4pots but would like to fit these pads to the car as they are so good, apparently. If you have could you post up the part number please.

REAR
Has anyone fitted Mintex to the rear Jag calipers?? If so could you post the part number up please.

Thanks
Nick

Don't think there are pad differences between vented and non-vented. But others can probably confirm that.
Don't have ford upfront anymore as uprated, but think it should not be an issue to find the proper mintex pads for ford calipers.
At the back mintex and fine.
As you probably know: uprate front only is ok, only rear is a no-no....

Always check the parts hoards. I have a new set of grandad Mintex 1144's for sale, I doubt that I'll use them now that I have AP 4-pots.

At a discount to retail price (whatever that is...)

Yes, they give more bite than standard compound, and are a cheap and effective upgrade, as is replacing the fluid with DOT 5.1 which boils at a higher temperature.

Guys, dont whatever you do put dot 5.1 into your wedge, i did this (as did dad in the ultima) and we both had terrible problems with leaks on both the clutch and brakes almost instantly...

Apparently there is something in 5.1 which perishes rubber seals...

Ive changed the seals on mine this winter because of it....

(p.s - i changed it thinking 'more is more', better boiling temp etc....BAD MOVE!!)

Strange put some in my 400SE and it was fine.

Remember matt your car was sitting un-used for a long time, so this may have had somthing to do with the seals. not sure about your dad's car.

Also are you sure it was 5.1 not 5.0 as 5.0 will rot the seals.

Ill check but im almost certain it was dot 5.1...ill have a look at the culprit!!

To be honest, when it started leaking i didnt even think it would be the fluid, but when dads started and a guy on the ultima forum had the same issue, it must be the fluid...

Im sticking to dot 4 now!!

Leigh

You have this wrong.

5.0 was developed by girling but never sold by them as it had issues.. namely if allowed water to become trapped in area's and this boiled causing problems - some other company bought the rights and sold it.

In the meantime 5.1 was developed and it very very good..

That's what is needed - it's pretty cheap now with no drawbacks.

Matt - what was the manufacturer of the fluid?

Anyone used DOT 6?

Rev - I saw a few tins of DOT 5.0 in my local garage which look like they've been sitting there for ages. I think it got used in Citroens maybe? Anyway, it's a silicone formula, and apart from the water 'puddles' boiling, the other problem is internal rusting of the calipers because the water isn't trapped in the fluid, and can eat away at stuff....

Dot 5 and 5.1 are both designed for ABS systems and both can give problems with calipers sticking on and seals wearing quicker than normal,a factor in manufacturers switching to other fluids, for me the best fluid would be a fluid that matches castrol response super, this matches or exceeds the heat capability of 5.1 and is still a dot 4, but the word super is crucial as there is castrol response which is also dot 4 but does not have the same ability to withstand heat. Dot 5.1 here since 5 years, no issues (but rear brakes are now binding)but endless performance on trackdays. Dot4 didn't cope with tracks....
Used ferodo no issues, but were no fast road and replaced with green stuff (no issues no squeeling either), mintex no issues and seem to me as good as green stuff. Rears only mintex last 4 years and no issues either.

Only issue upfront is a bit of pad out (a bit too much for my liking) but have 300mm rotors and they could cause this.
