I have a 1988 350i which keeps up with all the newer stuff (on the road). When you've got more than 200hp its more down to the risks you're prepared to take than anything else. The track would be different I'm sure. Mine is fairly standard and revs like crazy to 6,000rpm. I suppose if I was really picky a bit more mid range from 2,500 to 4,000 in top would be nice, but the engine sounds so much better if you thrash it. Its much, much easier to keep things standard. To change the engine would cost more than the cars worth unless you get a cheap 2nd hand unit, then you're back to square one. However, if you're rich and only a fast wedge will do, then buy the biggest Rover V8 you can and fit an Opcon Autorotor supercharger with integral intercooler. Regards, Mark

Given that L has a rattle in the engine sourcing a 3.9 or 4.6 o/o a Range Rover/Disco at a bargain basement price is worth checking out. (Same bhp, more torque, newer, cheap.)JR said:

all the bits on a 3.9 are swapable with a 3.5. the 3.9 will be hot wire, you not need to fit your plenum etc. or change the ECU and AFM.

Well the 3.9 are cheap but the 4.0 and 4.6's go for a hell of a lot more.
Slight tangent but I thought that Rover only built the 3947cc version of the 4 litre. Are you referring to Serp and pre Serp engines? Or to the end of the line engines where there was a plenum chamber more like the AJP8 etc. Or is there something else that you are trying to draw to our attention?JR said:

Also yes AFAIK all the 4.0 and 4.6's are serp. well I think there may have been some bored engines that was 4.6 but most early large engines was 4.2 or 4.5
