Might need an tad bit of help with this one. My gearbox has got a load whine in 1-2-3 gears but is quite in 4th, it only whines when the power is down but goes away when you lift off. Might be needing to take the gearbox out and repair or replace it.
How much hassle is it to remove the box??

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If it's a 4-speeder, then 4th is direct, so less likely to whine.

Sounds like your box is knacked, but fortunately they're not too uncommon (or dear) having been used in several Ford models. I think it's the type 9, off top of me head.

Anyway, it's an engine out job....certainly was when I had the clutch replaced on my 280 (and currently on my 400SE cry).

If the engine is to come out, you may as well sort everything else that becomes accessible...perhaps the clutch ?

Howabout a 5-speed box ?

The four speed gearbox is the ford type 5, the type 9 was the 5 speed. The easist way is to take the engine out, I've heard that the gearbox can be seperated from the bellhousing and removed but this looks very difficult / impossible.

I think the mount possition and length of propshaft are different with the 5 speeds so not a straight swap, definately change the clutch whilst its out.

This gearbox was used in all the V6 4 speed fords - capri, granada etc - so a replacement shouldn't be to hard to find. A guy on ebay often sells parts if you fancy rebuilding - I almost gurantee your layshaft will be badly worn - but this can quickly become alot more costly than a good second han box.

Good luck

Your gearbox will probably last for ages like that. To remove just the gearbox I have read that you remove the propshaft and split the gearbox from the bell housing and they will come out through the chassis

On mine someone had previously sawn through a chassis member welded flanges on and bolted it back in place. Handy but not something I would have done

There is a difference between a V6 and a 4 cylinder gearbox. The V6 input shaft is longer than the 4. I changed mine recently for a V6 Type 9 gearbox and it was a straight swop only requiring the bending of the gearlever as it was too far back. The first four gear ratios are the same in the 4 as the 5 speed

Mine was from a Tasmin so speedo operated correctly but the speedo drive locking bit that screwed onto the gearbox was wrong so the cable is tie-wrapped onto the chassis to hold it which means there is a sharp bed in the cable. This slows the speedo till it wears a new groove and when it wears out I will get the correct fitting.

Type 9 V6 gearboxes do appear on e-bay about £50-80. they are quite large and heavy Mine was £35 postage

Thanks for all your fantastic help, I have managed to source a couple of gearboxes, one a very low milage one off a 4 Cylinder and a V6 with milage unknown?
As the input shaft is shorter on the 4 Cyl will is still fit far enough into the clutch to work????

maybe you should start with replacing the gearbox oil?
(or top it up, only?)

it ight help to try differnt viscosities...but dont worry..even a wining gearbox or diff will last another (long) time.

Some interesting reading here:

http://www.degs.com/gearbox/gearbox.html

You'll probably have a headache after reading all the box variations,
but I think the answer is in there somewhere. hehe

New gearbox with short shifter, stock shifter, lever, ball, slipyoke, bellhousing and clutch arm looking 2k ish. Bear in mind this bellhousing was specially cast in LM25 for this application and is the only one made! I can cast more though if anyone wants just the bell?

from my expierience with other ford-powered cars the T9 gearbox isnt so strong as the type 5.

quickshift levers (not the cheapish conversion kits) for both boxes you´ll get here:

Nah, I'm not dissing the old wedge, I just find it a little tame in standard form which I guess is why the prices are what they are. A nice twin turbo 24v with that T56 would make it an absolute blinder of a car!

Shouldn't need to take the engine out (on a V6). I had both gearbox & clutch replaced a few years ago with the engine in situ, is a bit tricky but can be done. Then again, I had the engine replaced shortly afterwards anyway so needn't have bothered!
