Well I took the old starter off and it had a jammed solenoid plunger, so I cleaned it out and put it back together. The whole mechanism is free now but I think the solenoid has a short internally because it doesn't throw the arm over. The motor spins up OK though.

I have another working starter but it's an SDi one which is a little too big to go in without bashing the manifold around.

So I reckon I need a solenoid for the old starter, it's a Lucas 44S-12V and there's another number on there, 48 83*77162, if anyone has a good one off a knackered motor I'll buy it, or does anyone have recommendations for solenoid suppliers?

Numbers as above, also on the starter main body it's a Lucas 25366A 51 83 // 9M90 -> 12V.

As solenoids on their own are probably £30 or so, what I'll probably do is get one of those Prestolite starters for about £65 delivered, as they seem nice and small.

Then at some point when I have the time I'll take the solenoid apart and rewind it, it can't be that hard, it's not like it's a motor armature.
