How do you get mirrors apart?
Discussion
Does anyone know how to disassemble the powered mirrors used on the early Wedges (my car is a Series "1.5" 280i)? Whichever way I move the joystick mirror control, I only get in/out, not up/down, movement of the mirror. I want to get to the motor and solenoid to take a look at what's going on and whether I can repair it. I'm guessin' that the solenoid is working properly to engage the motor to the rack that controls up/down movement.
Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. The author of the mirror article, and others, on the Wedge Pages has been very graciously helping me on this and some other TVR Wedge things. But, this article on the Wedge Pages website doesn't describe how to dismantle the mirror to get to the bits inside, and neither does Ian.
On a cursory inspection of the non-faired mirrors fitted to my car, I don't seen an obvious way to take the mirror apart to get to the parts inside.

Mine (Feb '85) has two screwholes at the bottom, but for the life of me I can't get a screw-driver (of any shaped head) to engage with anything. I thought the screw heads might be rusted up ... but are there actually any screws in there? I want to disassemble one which has a similar problem - Streaky
Tempus, thanks for the reply. What you describe - a "centre band" - seems to describe my mirror type. I'll take a look at this.
Streaky, our cars are close. Mine is April '85. I'm able to remove my mirrors from their alloy/"pot metal" mounts that are affixed to the door. In/through the underside of each mirror base you should have two "grub" screws - one end slotted, one end pointed - that go though the alloy/"pot metal" mirror base affixing the mirror to the base/mount on the door of the car. I've been told these screws can be difficult to remove. I could see how corrosion of the steel screw and alloy mirror base could lock these up. Fortunately, I didn't have any problem with removing these screws with an appropriately sized flat bladed screw driver. You say you don't have anything in those mirror base holes, eh?
I'll try to post a picture.
Thanks, all.
