Not starting -might need a new fuel pump?
Discussion
A bit of history....My 1987 350i.recently had all new fuel hoses front to back also new fuel filter.
My local mechanic noticed the fuel swirlpot was leaking/corroded ,i patched it up with some fuel tank sealant stuff put it back on-car ran fine.
Meantime ordered new swirlpot to be safe waited a month to get it fitted....
Got local mech to fit it today all went ok until he reversed the car of ramps, car started fine but only ran for a minute then cut out and woul;d not restart-engine cranking fine-spark at plug but no fuel from pump.
Check voltage to pump-ok
Mech tried tapping fuel pump -no good, then tried reversing connections to pump and removing fuel inlet hose cranked car-apparently a bit of fuel came out.
Reconnected pump and hose went to start car and fuse 20A blew, now car would not crank!
Fuse according to label in glove box was for the coil? far right hand side of fuses 2nd one down from top.
I guess he has messed the pump connections up or shorted something.
Anyhow it was too late in the day to do much else so he is having another look at it tommorrow.
He is a honest young mechanic but dosent always exude confidence in his abilities.
so im thinking fuel pump blocked with something although the tanks have already been drained a couple of times now?
Fuel pump has decided to die on me-coincidence ?
If i need a new pump any links part numbers i can use?
cheers stu

I had this problem last year. I would check all connections especially the Earths as they may have been disturbed, check the relay and so on. You can test the pump off the car via the battery but only for a brief moment as the fuel lubricates the internals. Check the hoses are not blocked etc.
I don't want to scaremonger or anything but the fueling is controlled by the airflow meter that triggers the current for the fuel pump when the engine is cranked. My solution was drastic but that is for another post. Your mechanic needs to solve the problem not you as he made the changes!
