strange oil pump question
Discussion
Well after 2 oil changes still got not a lot of presure, maybe 25 psi
So thought I'd look at spring and new plunger again.
What exactly does the spring do, and what are the different lengths for, I think it was a shorter one for higher oil pressure and longer one as standard ?
However on taking the bolt of for the spring and plunger, no spring seemed to appear
So shoved a spare spring back in and just waiting to see how much oil I have before starting and going for a spin.
Strange as when I put oil pump back on I had good oil pressure until I changed the oil
So would have thought and hoped I remebered to put a spring back in as know what a buggewr it is to do on the car !
Oh well heres hoping I make it to Lemans and back, after all only leaving tomorrow !

The spring makes the plunger go back in, so when you're on low revs, you get no 'relief' and the full pump pressure goes to the engine. This is mainly to make sure the oil gets high enough up to oil the top end and cam.
When you get above 2k rpm or so the plunger starts to get pushed back bypassing the oil back to the pump inlet, reducing the pressure and reducing load on the pump and therefore the drive gear on the camshaft.
If the spring is missing or broken the plunger will stay pushed out so your low rev pressure will drop too much.
Conversely if the plunger sticks in the barrel the pressure relief won't happen and it'll get too high.

Well I must be going senile then, as pressure is now above 25 just.
But I'm sure I remeber the plug for the plunger and spring had a hollow insert that the spring would also sit in ? But the bung I took iut earlier did not have this making it very difficult to get spring and bung back on ?
If so where did I get thiss one from as also had a sealing ring on it ? So I'm now confused !!
