Hey guys,
Noticed that on start up the oil pressure light takes a while (probably up to 8 seconds) before it goes off. The gauge has always read low (almost none) whole time I have had it. I changed the sender a couple of years back and it actually made it worse!
How long do your lights take to go out?
I think the pump is starting to weap oil so a change is on the cards. Anyone else have this? How easy is this to do?
Cheers! Matt

4 or 5 seconds for light to go off and gauge head up. I had issues the other year and fitted a new gUge sender. Turned out to wrong one. As a check I bought an oil pressure test kit with various adapters which proved that all was well and it was indeed the sender unit that was faulty. Other issue could be blocked or gunged up oil ways that might need a clean up?

Interesting.....It has been worse since the last oil change. It's actually due a service and I'm picking up the parts tomorrow to do it. Will see if it makes a difference
Ah, did you new filter have a non return valve in it? If ot then it will take time to fill filer first before getting any pressure.

Hi Matt
Mine takes about the same as Jon & Keith's..When it starts....What oil are you using?

I'm using 20w 50 vr1 although I've just ordered some Gulf classic 20w50 mineral oil as there is a 50% off oil deal at Euro car parts and they don't sell vr1 any more (code is oil50 if anyone needs it). Think the deal stops on the 30th

Could be a number of other reasons then...Weakening oil pump..Sticking relief valve..Sludge...When its due an oil change try some flushing oil...I'm using 20w 50 vr1 although I've just ordered some Gulf classic 20w50 mineral oil as there is a 50% off oil deal at Euro car parts and they don't sell vr1 any more (code is oil50 if anyone needs it). Jesus, 23 quid for 5 litres of good old Glug? ON OFFER?! My local factors do something similar ('classic'
) for £12 every day of the week. It's pushing 16 years since I rebuilt my engine from the crank up and I've never wasted money on expensive oil, it's a bloody Rover V8 FFS.Wedg1e said:

Quite, mine is the Comma Classic now at around £14 a gallon. Change it every 3k miles you can't go wrong - my cam is still going strong at 80k now.

Try it the next day after starting it and time it then.
As Leigh says you can have the pump cover sorted out, but £200 is far too much, a local engineering company can skim the cover usually for around £20. Or you could use grinding paste on a sheet of flat glass to get a flat surface (rinse it well off after mind!)

Deal is 50 percent off so 34/2 = 17 quid for 5 litres. The classic part just means that it has added zinc.

What's your millage,
Might be worth getting the oil pump resurfaced and new gears, I think RPI do a exchange or could be just buy, but its at least £200 for the pump and gears.
On about 92k, although don't know the engine history before my time. I've done almost 40k on it myself in 11 years. Might be worth getting the oil pump resurfaced and new gears, I think RPI do a exchange or could be just buy, but its at least £200 for the pump and gears.
When I started it yesterday it had been almost a month so worst case scenario.
Re getting the pump skimmed, I can't find anyone to do anything for 20 quid?! The joys of Surrey...
Anyone got a link or any info before I go pulling things apart and things to visibly check?
Cheers!
I think you need a 12-point socket to remove the fixings on the pump cover. As with all of this stuff go around each one first, crack it 30 degrees then do it up again until sure all of them will move. Or else the engine will have to come out!
Probably a 6mm socket but that's from memory.
Have a look at the cover on the inside - if it's not scored then just put it back on.
In reality any leak here will have little effect anyway when the oil is cold, it makes a more noticeable effect with hot oil on tickover. If the hot tickover is healthy (i.e. the oil light doesn't flicker) then you're good.

Aye, it was up at £34 and when I put the discount code in it came up at £23
If you used the xmas code then that gives a random discount! Oil50 is the one

My local factors all charge a fortune for everything. Shame, I try to support them but it's getting harder to do especially when they don't seem that fussed about my custom!
