Hi all,

Originally from UK - Living in Ireland.

Heading back to the UK at the end of August to see family. I'm bringing my motorbike and heading from Fishguard to Bromsgrove. Was wondering if you had any suggestions for a fun/scenic route to take. Or do I just tell google maps to avoid motorways?

Door to door it's a 3 hr 30 drive, but I'd be in no rush to get to Bromsgrove and land in Fishguard at an early time, so I'm happy for it to be a 5 hr journey or more.

Thanks in advance!

I think probably there's a nice route through Snowdonia but that's not the part of Wales I'm familiar with.

Instead I'll recommend detouring through the Brecon region.

Get yourself from Fishguard to Camarthen. Take the A40 up to Llandog and come off there onto the A4069 and head South up the Black Mountain pass. This is a technical road with a few switchbacks and many undulations. Lots of viewing points if you want to take in the vista.

At Brynamman turn off towards Gurnos. Then up the A4067 all the way up to Sennybridge through the Brecons and back onto the A40 - this is a fast flowing road with scenery unlike most of the UK. Head East on the A40 at Sennybridge. Although not technical I think it is a lovely road to drive/ride comfortably.

If you have lots of time you could do another loop from Sennybridge through the Brecons. Just before reaching Sennybridge you can head East at Defynnog on the A4215. When you reach the A470 head South, turn right at the A4059 and follow it to it's end at Hirwaun, quick blast East on the dual carriageway (A465) to Merthyr and back up the A470 all the way to Brecon before getting back onto the A40 East. You see a few reservoirs more mountains and lots of sheep on the road on this loop. In fact you see a lot of sheep and a few cows on lots of the roads I mentioned so be careful

I know the roads less from there on but I imagine heading Northeast up the A470, A438 etc. in a straight line towards Kidderminster would be nice. The Welsh borders should be lush and green. Not demanding but nice to watch the scenery as you ride thorugh.

I can honestly say the B4520 from Brecon to Builth Wells visit Lower and then Upper Chapel is probably the best road I have ever driven, we used to do it on advanced driving courses back in the day. It'll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up

You reckon? It's very good - and I live on it, but that seems a bit strong to me.

Of course, we are starting to see the inevitable increase in cyclists now that Le Tour is coming through, so be on-your-guard.
