Escort mk6 Problems

Just been offered a mk6 Escort and was just wondering if there was any problems i should be looking out for when i have a look around it later today?.

Usual stuff really. Also check the under bonnet fuse box. They were known for water ingress problems. Make sure someone hasn't botched it (take the cover off - it'll be obvious) and see if you can find a bill for one in the service history.

Lower arms (wishbones) are a very common problem. You will feel the car pull to one side under braking and acceleration if they are gone.

Escorts are getting on a bit now so theres the posibility of rust. Check the rear arches, rear chassis legs, boots and sills, especially if it has a sun roof.

If it's the 1.6 petrol then give it a drive and check for hesitation and 'surging' under acceleration. Particularly noticable if you try to make a quick exit from a junction or onto a roundabout.

Everythings fine but once its warmed up the idle is up and down up and down.. any ideas what this could be?

ICV - Idle Control Valve

or was that on the 1.8?

Try cleaning - nowt to lose. If not, replace.

Worth trying a Ford parts place, and somewhere like the online ones (Allen Ford web shop, for example) as prices vary.

Sticking ICVs are very common indeed. Remove, blast with carb cleaner. Leave. Repeat. Refit.
