The heater in my (Y) 2001 2.0 Zetec has packed up. The fan still works but no heat is generated.

If you go along distance you get a tiny b it of heat but obviously nothing like what you should.

Any ideas?

Possibly the thermostat stuck open or worst case scenario being the head gasket gone. Has it lost any water recently?

Run the self-diagnosis test...

http://www.fordmondeo.org/wiki/index.php/Climate_C...

...even if it doesn't report anything they can suffer from a sticky flap and the self-diagnosis exercises all the bits and can free off the flap (worked for us anyway).

My model only has the dials for altering the air temp and flow direction, and a button for A/C. Can I still do a self diag?

I don't know I'm afraid. If you have climate control with an auto setting where you just set the temp then the instructions work. If not have a look around the wiki for something more suitable or do a search in the forum.
