Not a great day, feel low about my TVR ownership.

Took the car in for a service and a clutch (98 chim with 42k), had a dodgy starter and battery that has been replaced, intake manifold gasget leeking and replaced, vaious other bits. Now get the call to say cam shaft gone after an inspection while the top bit of the engine was off for the gasget.

All of these items are on or at the mark mentioned in other posts just did not figure them all at once.

Good news if there is any, the car will be totaly sorted for another 40k. I have Steve Howard doing all the work so the cost is very low and I am sure will be done very well.

Still need some words to make me feel better about TVR while looking at the bill!!

Yes that will cheer him up!

Sorry to hear of the problems - in a few days/weeks you'll have got over the shock (the bill) and be back to enjoying the driving. As you say it should be good for the next 40k.

Not too bad, looking at around £1,200 for a clutch, service, starter, batt, camm, intake gasget replace, take out pre-cats and a few other bits.

Summer days
top down
wind through the hair
admiring looks
hearing THAT engine sound
feeling that surge under the right foot
handling round corners
feeling that usual grin coming on
being a little bit different
not owning a Euro box
being SPECIAL!!!!!!!!!!

You said it yourself - £1200 for all that work isn`t bad really.

You wouldn`t sell your "soul" for £1200 would you?!!!

There is more. Also having Nitrons and AP race brakes installed, all next week. I will need to keep the car for a few years now, was thinking of an upgrade.

Considering all the fixes/mods what else will/can go wrong around this milage mark 40k.

Start a puny engined car and listen to it.
Start your TVR and listen to it.

If that doesn't make you want to keep it, let me drive your TVR and see the size of my grin, then you'll want that grin too

I paid £800 for the camshaft alone (around the going rate) - I think you've got a good deal there.

Keep the TVR - what on earth could you replace it with and have as much fun using???

At £1200 for all that work it is an absolute steal, might as well keep it for another 40K then .

Agree with the other comments on the cost here - at £1200 its not that bad. Its a pain that it is all in one big go, but in reality a relatively cooking car you are looking at the following:

1) Clutch - £300 - £400 (most moderns require an engine out)
2) Head gaskets - £200 (again most moderns need loads of head bits removed to get to it)
3) Pre cats - £200
4) Starter motor - £100 part and £50 fitting
5) Battery - £50

etc etc etc

All up pretty good value for money and as you say for the next 40K it will only require routine servicing (touch wood). So not that bad really....

Do it, you know you want to....Why not get a sports zorst while you are at it?

Cheers,

Paul

Here's my reasoning. If you've just spent £1200 on your car, you need to get your money's worth. I can't see the sense in spending that kind of cash and giving someone else the benefit!!

You shouldn't keep it, you will just spend more money on it in the future. Get rid of it whilst you can and sell it to me for £2,000 as soon as the work is done.

The dent on your wallet will be temporary. The dent to your enjoyment of top down blasts over the next 5 months, will last, well...5 months !
