One question that's been asked many time before I'm sure, but what are the thoughts on engine oil for a '99 Chimaera 400. Option seem to be:-
Mobil 1 15W40?
Millars 10W60
Valvoline Racing 20W50

any other suggestions?

Also looking for oil for my T5 box - needs to be an ATF (I've talked to Tremec)- current favourite is Castrol Dexron III. Other suggestions?

nope.

seems like you have all the options.

the choice, as they say, is yours.

do a search and you'll find some long debates.

erm, I've just topped up with Castrol Magnatec 10w40 as that's what was put in at the last service- so there are other options.

This is semi- synthetic, of course, and seems to be the right balance for the car.

edited to say that Halfords are currently doing a deal on this- 4.5 litres= £17.99.

I think its a matter of personal opinion, I crew for a Drag Race team and we will only use mineral oil, not forgetting that the Chimaera engine is a 30 year old design. The gear box is mobile ATFSHC synthetic ATF, due to being Hydraulic oil it loses its lubricant ability very quickly, I have to change mine every year or I have trouble selecting gears.

Nope. What about Whale Blubber Oil? If it was good enough for Herr Diesel and the Chimaera engine is after all based originally on a 100 year design so it must be the best. Environmentally sound as you can recycle washed up sperm whales as well.

The Mobil 1 that I use in my Griff 500 is 0-40 and works fine...no tappety noises.

I read somewhere that you can buy Mobil 1 cheaper in France...so perhaps next "Booze Cruise" I will have to get the Griff a can of duty free?

sperm whales?

hell - you can keep those away from mine, i have enough trouble affording the maintenance, let alone what will happen if she falls pregnant.

Picked up a Chimaera 400(98) from Fernhurst about a month ago and they recommended 15w/50 fully synthetic. Mobil 1 Motorsport was the only one of this kind that I could find available and is stocked by most of the large Halfords.

As the other have said, there are lots of threads on here and people seemed to use a few different variants. Guess the bottom line is to use a good quality oil, don't mix it and keep it topped up.
