I have finally accepted that I must play the Bib at their own game and invest in a radar detector. I have always considered my eyes to be the best form of detector but am now finding myself looking out more for scameras than I am on concentrating on the road. It looks as though I shall be going the road angel route....

anyways, few questions before I buy...

1. How do people mount them in the car? I dont want to have to put the roof on every time i park up so do people velcro them and stick them in the boot? or can you screw them in place so someone cant walk off with it?

2. how is the power supplied? In the S I cant use anything that plugs into the ciggie lighter (such as mobile phone charger) as it sticks out too much and the room in the footwell is not enough to get my leg past it so couldnt have a temp plug in..

cheers all

Hello shnozz.Just a quick reply to your question about fitting radar detection units.I have a Snooper S5-R and I have used velcro to fix mine to the dash of our Griff so that I can place it in the boot when ever I park up (ps never leave it your car even with the windows up as I fear a brick and a little **** will soon relieve you of an expensive bit of kit!).As for the power source I use the cigarette lighter but you can also wire it directly into a power supply using an in line fuse but check the instructions first.Goodluck.

Get yourself a Geodesy they come with two mounting cradles one that plugs into the lighter socket & one that can be wired into the radio supply, the unit just unplugs from the cradle.

Nick - thanks for that - is this the one?? www.radar-detector-shop.co.uk/morpheous_geodesy.htm

i would probably get the auto-electricians to install if its to be wired into the stereo etc...

I know little about the subject but asked around and a lot of people recommended the Road Angel in the "cheaper" end of the bracket (ie not the valentine one!)

does the geodesy pick up all Gatso/truvelo etc and how does it fair with mobile units? If it is not mounted directly on the dash is it best to buy the upgrade aerial kit?? and if so, is that just a small aerial that mounts on the dash??

any advice much appreciated.

The Geodesy is a GPS based system so does not pick up mobile units on it own, but I think they now have a radar device that interfaces with it.See www.geodesygps.co.uk for more details.I do not have the remote airel fitted and it picks up the satalite fine in the position shown in the picture.

I don't think any of the GPS units have radar detection. Some (like the Road Angel) have optional laser detection.

I would probably already have bought a Road Angel if the laser detector also covered Radar. Knowing where the fixed points are is great but you don't know if they are active without Radar and you don't get all of the mobile units with just Laser either. Plus, unless you are lucky or have a blinder, a laser detector just tells you when you're speed has been got by BiB.

So the only solution to cover everything is to have both a GPS unit and a radar/laser detector as well (preferable with blinder). This causes problems of location and powering all the devices.

Also, none of them detect VASCAR etc run from in-car.

So I tend to stick to reasonable speeds and hope my luck continues.

Edited 'cos I've just checked the Geodesy link and there's now does hav an optional radar detector. I'm trying to find more details on it at the moment.

I've got a Snooper S6-Neo. Its a GPS unit with plug in radar/laser detector. Covers most bases except VASCAR of course.

I use a Bel995 and its the business, picks up Gatso's, mobiles from a fair distance particularly when its in motorway mode.
Can be a bit unnerving if you're moving on and then it bleeps but you can tell by the strength of the signal as the beeps get louder as it gets closer, can't recommend these highly enough.
