Does anyone have any comments on whether the Castrol Magnatec Oil is any good in a Griffith?

Only reason for asking is that my Griff 500 (N reg) is going in for it's first service in my ownership next Friday and David Batty who's servicing it uses the stuff. I was going to supply Mobil 1 Motorsport but frankly it's flippin expensive and if the Magnatec's good enough then I might as well use that. If David's using it I would expect it to be more than sufficient but as I've never used before I'd appreciate any comments!

Thanks in advance - Chris

Well i'm using it in my serpentine-engined wedge so would be interested to hear any views on this.

When I had my Griff 500 TMS in Melton Mowbray put Magnatec in mine. They reckoned that it was slightly thicker and better in the V8 lump. They're a main dealer so I'm sure they know what they're doing!

For what it's worth, it is what my local Merc dealer uses!

It is the best oil for a Rover V8 of any sort.

Mobil 1 far exceeds the performance of the Rover V8. It is really intended for high revving turbocharged engines and competition. The Rover has run out of puff at 6000 rpm so 20/50 oil is more than adequate. The most important thing is that it is clean and free from contamination so regular oil changes are more important than synthetic oil. The only thing I use Mobil 1 or Castrol RS for is my lawnmower which is flat out from the minute it starts and even that gets changed teice a year

I've tried Magnatec & Mob1 in my 97 Chimaera. Castrol's better IMHO as it hardly uses any. The Mobil seems to burn away & leave a black deposit round the tail pipes.

Useful general rule is that whatever D Batty says is right!

Use magnatec in my 450SE, get good stable oil pressure, and less oil consumption when compared to Mobil 1 which is too thin for an engine designed 50 years ago !!

My two pence worth.

As long as the oil is changed regularly, you will have no problems.

Although oddly enough when I used Valvoline Racing in the Hart 2.8 Turbo engine in my Pilbeam it burnt and used the stuff at an unbelievable rate, yet it was fine with other oils. It crossed my mind that the heat of the Turbo on that engine may be breaking down the Valvoline more readily than it did others. Bit of a mystery, but it has kept me away from Valvoline since !!

The various people I've spoken to regarding oil in a RV8 say that Valvoline Racing is hard to beat, but the ideal is something like Millers or Castrol RS, but they're about twice the price of the Valvoline.
Which is why I've got 2 bottles of Valvoline at home waiting to be used.

magnatec(10w40)isnt that great an idea in these engines imho.my reasoning for this is that its not thick enough when hot,nor is it fully synthetic.where so many people seem to get confused is that in saying mobil 1 is no good, burns up quickly etc.is that there talking about the 0w40 grade.infact there are two types of mobil 1 available, the other is 15w50 motorsport.this motorsport version is the one to use.you get very low oil consumption and with better hot temp protection from it being thicker and still fully synthetic.also good cold start protection from the slower drain down time.the recommended oil when griffs/chims were new was mobil 1 5w50,but thats no longer available so 15w50 is the better and closer choice.whatever brand you prefer, the thicker oils suit the engine better-it was originally designed to use 20w50!

I’d go with the Mongoose and stay synthetic, however if you can get it Valvoline do a fully synthetic 5W50 called Synpower and its only £22 for 4 litres.

Simon.

can you mix, mobil 1 motorsport and magnatec or does it need a complete drain and refill?

Absolutely right IMHO !

If you really want to be an oil perfectionist, then Mongoose sums it up in a nutshell. Otherwise, provided you warm up the V8 throughly before you give it significant revs and you use a good quality branded oil then you should also have no problems.

Mobil 1 is a highly developed oil, but it is the 15/50 version that is best suited for the V8. I also had my Chim serviced last week by Dave Batty and I supplied my own 15/50 Mobil Motorsport. Dave had no problems putting that in the V8 instead of his usual Castrol. With Dave, if you have a personal choice and it doens't interfere/compromise with the safely and reliability of the car, he'll happily oblige.

It is my understanding that synthetic and mineral oils do not mix.

That said how you get round changing from one to the other has always bothered me. I cant believe most people completely strip and clean their engines. According to my Griff handbook the 500 motor is run in on mineral and then changed to synthetic.

I guess I’m really saying, I don’t know.

Cheers,

Simon.

I've got the Valvoline Synpower 5w 50 in the Griff at the moment and it seems to be quite good.

Re. the Magnatec, I wasn't aware that it's not fully synthetic? If David Batty's happy putting it in cars he services then it must be pretty good for the engine, after all, surely he doesn't want to damage his reputation by using oil in serviced engines that won't sufficiently protect them?
