Will it be good by TVR hello XK8,my dilemma!

I got a phone call early this morning,from a freind that runs an independant Jag specialists.He told me he had a car in that i just had to see.When i arrived,there staring at me was a gleaming black XK8 sitting on Jags very own 20 inch 3 piece Detroit alloys,Brembo racing brakes,and tinted windows all around.The car looks absolutely stunning.A quick spin out on the roads and the car performs well.It hasnt got the raw edge of my TVR,but is more refined,but there is more than enough power there to please.The car is being offered to me at agood price.The dilemma is that in order to buy,one has to go and that would have to be the TVR.My heads saying buy the jag but my hearts saying keep the TVR.I really dont know what to do.I really want to keep my TVR,but i cant if i want the jag.Balanced advice needed.But ive got a feeling i know what you are going to say

Sell the TVR and buy the Jag. If it's being offered to you at a good price and you decide later it's not for you, then at least you have the comfort in knowing that you will not lose too much dosh in the process.
You'll easily pick up another Tiv, but this Jag sounds a bit special.
Don't get me wrong however, I'm no fan of the XK8. Thought about buying one. Test drove it. Decided to put it on the list of cars to own when I'm retired. Been driving TVRs for 8 years now and also getting a bit sick of them. If only I could find something I like in a sensible price bracket

2 - are you Princess Anne?
If the answer is 'yes' to both - buy the Jag!

The XK8 is a beautiful car no doubt about it. And I know about the "old man's car" and "fat man's car" nonsense people come out with - and it doesn't matter.
The XK8 is a soft GT the TVR is a hardcore Sports. What did you want out of the car? Is an everyday drive or a weekend blaster?
Is it important that the top comes off?

I've had a few Jags, all of them the saloons, starting on a series 3 V12 at the tender age of 25! - so don't believe the old fat man malarky, they are great cars.... having said that, the only one that I would even consider selling the Griff for would be the super charged XJ-R... never liked the XJS, don't like the XKs... if you want a sports car, you know what to do... or rather, you did know what to do and did it!!!
I was going through this last year when I reached 50, sell the Chim and buy a XK Jag. Jag's a good car but Very slow when compared to the Chim, even the XKR. Now an Arden conversion starts to get serious and looks good but b...... expensive. Decided I'm not old enough yet for the Jag so in the end I bought a Tuscan, absolutley fantastic!

As Don said the two cars are entirely different and shouldn't be compared like for like, I've had the privilege of running both an XK8 and Griffith for the last 9 months and wouldn't dare to compare them. The Griff is a hard core, raw, drivers car that needs to be "driven" to be enjoyed IMO it is a weekend toy used for blasts. The XK8 is a refined, elegant, cruiser that will merrily sweep along doing over a ton with the cruise control set playing gentle music through the Kardon whoever it is stereo system.
To some it up I take the Griff to LeMans or out on a sunday morning, the Jag for a 5 hour blast over to Germany, oh yes and a diesel Passat to sit in trafic on the way to work every day. If you can't have both decide what you want a rawing vicous bugger that will bite you it you fcuk with it but reward you with grins if you work it hard, or a swooshing elegant sleek looking glider that you can just get in and press go before falling asleep.

Thing is, your post gives the impression that you will come back to a TVR...........
why sell the Chimaera if you are happy with it.......

A friend, a true Griff man, had always hankered after a Ferrari. The opportunity came after he tried a Tuscan and didn't like it.....while he was looking for a Griff...he saw a Ferrari and had to buy it.(the hankering thing!!!)...lasted 6 months..
He now has a Griff...........

Mark, you have the Range Rover for sedate driving, why change.
I remember a thread from someone called Phil (know who I mean?) suggesting the Griffith was a car for the older man. Surely if you're thinking of the Jag he would be most upset with you, & you wouldn't want that.
When you get to my age the Jag would be perfect, Im very tempted to get one, but stick with the Tiv for now...you know it makes sense.

Well i dont know about the phil thread never really got around to reading it.But in know way can you call this XK8 an old mans car,you really have to see it.I had another look at it today and its tormenting me.One other point,its all right for you,living in kent with your nice long winding roads,but spare a thought for us that live in london,with constant speed bumps every where,after a while the TVR can become a bit tiresome in these situations.
I know what you mean Mark, I have to say Bromley is a bit short of winding country lanes though.
There is no way I would want to drive the Griff around S. London all day, thats why I have 2 cars.
I love the XK8, if you have to sell the Tiv then I cant think of anything I would rather drive, its just a shame you have to choose, cant you get rid of a spare tank or something?
