Just had my 4.0HC chimaera serviced (a 30k job). I've only had the car for a year and bought it from a well known dealer with a full TVR history. Agonised for ages about whether to go dealer or specialist, as I'm sure most of you have done, weighing up extortionate dealer prices but maintaining a full TVR history. Plumped for the "safe" but expensive route in the end and took it back to where I bought it, in the expectation of top notch service to match the top notch prices.
Picked it up and paid my £750 (30k service + MOT). The car hadn't been washed, an indicator bulb which needed replacing was replaced with one the wrong colour and the clutch action which was silent before now operated with a coffin lid type creak. I did e-mail them expressing my disapointment but got a fairly dismissive reply.
Have I got unrealistic expectations in terms of service? Is it worth the cost to keep a full TVR history?

Depends on the main dealer... Age of the car.... length of time you intend to keep it.. (if first few years and you might resell, you generally would get a better price from soneone that doesn't understand about specialists)

As with most manufacturers, some main dealers are better than others (same for independants)

Word of mouth and personal experience means somes dealers are MUCH busier than others. I still don't know how my dealer gets the polishing too look so much better when I do it.....

OOOOOUUUUUUCCCCCCCHHHHHH. £750 for a 6000mile (30k) minor service and MOT is waaaaaaaaaay over the top. It shouldn't even cost that much for a 12k major service. Unless you had other work done as well.

Definately would not touch a main dealer that charged that sort of price.

Never mind the email and dismisive reply. Get the pen out and write a stifly worded letter mentioned lawyers and trading standards.

Hand deliver it and suggest that they can check the defects (eg clutch squeek) for themselves before you leave but that you won't be leaving until you have a date for when they will put it right FOC (including a free loan car for the day).

Then when they have fixed it all DO NOT EVER take it back to them. Find out on here where your best local independent is and use them.

I wouldn't be so hasty. Mediation has to be better than outright aggression here.

You have to start with the assumption that they care about maintaining their customer base so I'd be inclined to telephone the general manager and talk through with him what your expectations were when you brought in the car. You can say just what you said in this thread about wanting the best possible service for your car etc etc. Give them an opportunity to fix the situation. In fact it would probably have been better to do this before emailing them in the first place. It's easy for someone to fob off an email. Not so easy on the telephone.

Apart from that, you most certainly were ripped off for a service at that price. Amazing that they're still in business.

Good point Angus. I was just going off the fact he had already contacted them but you are correct a phone call now could make all of the difference.

When I stopped using main dealers I took the view that the cash I would save in servicing would greatly overshadow and losses I'd take when I sold the car. I think if the handbook had been stamped with 100% main deal I would not have got any more than I did finally get for it.

However if I was getting a new TVR (which I would not cos I'm never going to be that stupid again) or even a nearly new one which I intended to sell on within a year or two then I probably would use a main dealer as I think that sort of car might appeal to a different buyer who might be more picky about that sort of thing.

Thanks for the replies guys. In terms of the cost the only additional work was supplying a new rear number plate. The biggest hit was labour at £68/hr + vat. I agree speaking over the phone might get a better response than an e-mail but I'm just so cheesed off about the whole thing I really don't feel like talking to them!
Wish I could name the dealers to prevent anyone else getting stung but I think "protocol" doesn't allow it

I'll phone them up on your behalf as " your representative" if you like

Dave Batty charges 35 an hour or thereabouts (Well it was last time I went there I think) and he's Jesus, Mary, the Lord God almight and Ayrton Senna all-in-one in the TVR specialist world. Pisses me right off with folk getting ripped off with rediculous rates at these garages.

sorry but I cant see what you are complaining about?
A bulb ?! (big deal) Service Cost (looks like par for the course to me) and squeaky clutch (could be lots of reasons for this).
If you dont like the price then vote with your feet.

Recently my 4L Chim had it's 36k service at Blackpool - from memory it was around £540 with labour at £44/hr I think. I was more than happy with the service and responce from the people there. What the h..l is a dealer doing charging half as much again as the factory? Out of interest, what area are you in?

I think what he is trying to say is he feels hes paid 1st rate money on a 2nd rate service £750 maybe the going rate for Cerby/Tuscan owners i would expect my car to be faultless AND clean for that price its a lot of money just to keep a full main dealer history and no wonder so many owners are going to the independants

I heard recently from one of his other customers that he has put his labour rate upto £40/hour. Not sure though as I use Steve Howard myself - who I know does charge £40/hour.

Most indies have a fixed rate for services though which is alot lower than main dealer as they use real times for how long the job takes rather than "book" times.

My sympathy - just shelled out £675 for a 12k service, which I thought was pretty steep - phoned around other TVR dealers nationwide, found it was the cheapest quote! Some as high as £850!

As the car's now out of warranty, decided to look for a specialist instead next time - anyone got any recommendations in the Northeast?

You could try R & P Woods in Newcastle. They aren't TVR specialists but they do do quite a few TVRs in the area including mine. They have a rolling road which is handy and regularly prepare race and rally cars, so they know whatthey are doing. I've just had a 6K service, MOT, clutch master AND slave cylinders replaced and all the fuel injectors cleaned for 550 including VAT. I reckon that's good value and they are always keen to help

Specialist or Dealer? I'll let you know during the week about a tale of woe I'm having at the moment.

Just paid £672 for a 6,000 mile service & MOT. The car wasn't touched for 6 weeks and was running faultlessly before it went in. Since I've had it back my starter motor's been playing up, the body work obtained a nasty scratch on the front wing and bumper and to cap it all off today - the car has develpoped a running fault, the engine keeps cutting out and I've just now now discovered its dumping its petrol from the fuel filter (which was replaced)onto the road.

The culprit? let's put it this way, if he doesn't sort it out I'll gladly let you know who it is. To be fair, he's got this week to come up with a solution otherwise I'll name & shame.

Joospeed, Top specialist, He is in Chesterfield.

I have 2 main dealers near me and both are crap. They just employ young lads who don't know much.

Chesterfield is a 200 mile round trip for me but its worth it.
