Road trip to Wales, any suggestions ?

Im thinking of heading up to Wales for 3 or days to take my S on its first proper road trip. Does any one having any suggestions on where to go. I would like some good " Trevor" roads with nice senery, any nice coast roads ? Any suggestions on B&B's would be good also. Im heading up from London. Im also open to other area's in the UK, any where nice would be good.

When are you in Wales, and where are you heading for?
South Wales Region have a weekend out 16th /17th August, staying in Rhayader on the 16th. More than welcome to join us if you wish, and will let you know tel numbers of B & B`s in the area.
180 mile round trip last Sunday up through mid Wales to Aberystwyth, and back again, quiet roads, sun what more can you ask for.

Head for the brecon beacons. Dead easy to get to from London. Loads of B&B's around. The roads around Crickhowell are great.

There's a very nice stright on the A44 into Wales . .

North Wales is where EVO etc test their cars . .

Can recomend the Rhayader weekend.
When are you going etc? There are 2 big shows on that will take up b+b's and roads. Week of the 4th Aug (I think), Eisteddfod near Welshpool and July (can't remember the week) Royal Welsh show at Builth Wells. All accom for miles around theses are gone, I know we are working there and can't find any.

Take the A5 all the way up through Betws-Y-Coed and in to Llanberis - good roads and good scenery.

All of the empty roads round the reservoirs near Elan / Rhayader are also worth a thrash.

I was going to suggest, the road that runs from the M4 then M48 through chepstow, head for tintern then find your way to usk (can stay at a small hotel called "The Rat Trap" in Gwernesney) then onto abergavenny through crickhowell&brecon beacons, builth wells, rhayader(stop for lunch/food at a place on right, old country manor house, used to be called the workhouse, now called ? ? ? (will try to find out for you), head for Machynlleth via narrow mountain road (absolutely mental!), through mac then through Pennal and on to aberdovey (nice small hotel there, cant remember namewill have a go at rembering yet again!) all around there is very nice, great roads, nice beach & moors & mountains.

Craig, would you be thinking of the Llanidloes to Machynlleth via Staylittle and Dylife? Absolutly stunning drive up there. All back roads and scenery to die for. Plenty of stopping places especially around the lakes. Travelled them routes a lot and even better it was for work so got paid for it.

Thats exactly where I mean Jeff! I was racking my brains to remember. I do that trip once a year, used to be fun in the 911&Griff etc but now we have our new addition to the family its always the Jeep

That said there was 2 feet of snow up there last time and some 6 feet drifts, all of which I drove right through very irresponsibly.

We have friends that live just outside Machynlleth, and that is the route we use. It's excellent fun to drive. I just wish I could afford a TVR NOW, rather than still saving, to drive up there in......

Ah well..... I'm sure there's something about appriciating it more if you've worked hard for it..... doesn't make the waiting any easier though.....

As you get out of Machynlleth turn left for Aberdyfi and Tywyn the head up the vally to the Tal Y Llyn lake and on to Dolgellau, stunning.

Avoid - speed trap on A65 Prestatyn Road (north Wales) I wish I did. Unmarked van with some TXXWAT poking out a radar gun.

Enjoy - the roads leading to Abersock. Absoultey perfect and were quiet awhile I was there. One of the highlights of the weekend.

Stay - at Gwydir Castle Cheap as chips annd you get a whole castle to run amok in. Stunning.

Joke of trip... "I see Welsh people" ...Sad I know...

One further suggesstion...
If you are in the area and if you can find it you have to take a small lane (not even a B road but fine to drive) which heads almost directly south from Hay on Wye to meet the A465 at Llanvihangel Crucorney. This takes you through the heart of the Black Mountains, the views Hay on Wye side is fantastic. At the junction on A465 you'll also find The Skirrid Inn..which boasts to be the oldest pub in Wales.
