Guys, please help!

Today after 16 months of trouble free motoring, I lost 5th gear, and haven't a clue why. I still have 1,2,3,4 and reverse, but there's no 5th gear at all, can't get the gear stick into the gap (thats now not there).

All that happened was after 30 miles, stoppped at a round-a-bout, took off, and thought, "Can I do 60 in 2nd?" The answer was yes with a few hundred revs to spare, into 3rd, 4th then...5th had gone.

If someone has some ideas, please, I'd like to hear them.

And are we talking really expensive here? Its a 1998(S) Chim500.

Many thanks

Probably should also ask, is the gearbox something someone other than a TVR garage/specialist could be asked to fix?

Could be linkage... alright pray it is linkage otherwise it is new/recon gearbox time. Might as well check the clutch and renew is necessary.

If its linkage, whats invloved and any idea of cost?
If it is this, what might have happened?

If its a recon/new gearbox...whats the cost?

Also, would it be best not to move the car anymore?

And finally, does a TVR garage/specialist have to do the work for either possible problem?

Maybe a bent or loose selector fork. Is it a Rover LT77 'box or were they using something else by then? The linkage on the LT77 is very simple and if you get 4 gears it's unlikely to be the cause.

That would be a BW T5 box. Usually bullet-proof. I would think something in the selector mechanism.

I had a similiar problem. Lost 5th in my Cerby (98R 4.5) coming back from Germany.......hooked it into 4th, checked for "unusual noises" (none ) and carried on. By the time I got to Walldonway in Maidstone (200 miles...) the box/drive was sounding like a bag of nails. I had to have a new gearbox....

Just spoken with Offord's in Cambridgeshire. And booked the car in to be fixed and serviced.

He seemed to think the problem was unlikely to be the linkage or selector mechanism, as that's apparently an unusual problem, but obviously they'll know more when they see it.

He went to say (as someone else did here) it's quite a common thing to lose 5th with these gearboxes, and in fact with some of the newer TVR's too.....

So it seems likely that they'll rebuild the gearbox....

I'll let you know the cost and level of service from Offord's if anyone is interested after its all been done.

Thanks for you suggestions and help guys....

Common problem with the BW T5, i ahd the very same issue last year after running at speed in 5th and then lost it. As all the dealers wil swear it's usually bullet proof, well the T4 part is anyway.

Be very careful when you get it back, i had a complete re-build, they had the car for 2 weeks and charged , i think arround 500 for the job. I got in the car drove away (only motorway drivng- nothing heavy) and within 40-50 mile the same problem re-occurred.
When i challenged the dealer, he said 'well sire, you did say the boy was fine for 50 miles'! my re-action, well you can imagine....

So, if this is a common problem, why haven't TVR addressed the issue?

Surely something could have/can been done? And since it is a common problem, what's the general cause?

My car has only done 15K miles from new, so I am somewhat dissapointed. Apart from the comments above, can I expect the gearbox to be as good as new once rebuilt, I don't like the idea of having to live with it knowing it might go again any minute after 40-50 miles....

The gear boxes are bought in. The same thing happens with them when they are fitted to Cosworths & Mustangs. Perhaps you should try thinking rather merely waving your anti-TVR bigotry about?
