Evening all.We are off to Switzerland soon in the car. My question is not really car oriented. But advice would help please.
I've been told that the Swiss have unusual mains electric plug sockets, Somewhat differant from the UK. As i will need to charge Phone/pad/Digital camera etc. Have any of you come across this, and solved the problem regarding Chargeing UK devices?
Ta in advance....Dave

Swiss domestic supply is 230v 50hz ie same as uk. The plugs are Swiss specific so you will need an adapter.
See here for help https://travelguide.all-about-switzerland.info/bas...

My office was just outside Zurich, never had any issues with running any electrical stuff. I had one adapter and a normal UK 4 socket extension lead.

Just a normal Euro two pin adaptor you use in any other Euro country does the job. I am just back from Italy with the Griffiths, Mille Miglia, fabulous, via Switzerland there and back. Where exactly are you going?

When I've been out there before we just put Swiss plugs on the end of uk 4-gang extension leads and it worked fine - instant multi plug adapter, and cheap too.

nono No, the European two pin adaptors will not fit Swiss mains sockets. The Swiss have their own special shaped sockets & plugs.

At our hotel, the receptionIst kindly lent us some adaptors so we could use the Euro plugs.

If you intend doing a fair bit of driving, why not get a multi-socket in-car adaptor that plugs into your 12v socket? You can charge your phone as you go, and also power a sat nav. etc.

Weird, we stayed at a hotel on southern side of Lac Lucerne, and the Euro 2 pin was fine there!

The Euro 2 pin type C plug WILL work in the Swiss plugs.

It is compatible with all Continental Plug sockets (types E, F, J, K and L) ... Switzerland plugs are type J.

I travel extensively for work and I carry something like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Charging-Desktop-Station-...

I need the high number of sockets, there are cheaper ones, just make sure the mains lead is a standard detachable figure of eight lead.

Here's a cheaper one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rated-Charger-RAVPower-4-...

I then take the USB charger and the appropriate mains lead for the destination.

For Europe(inc Switzerland) you need one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cables-UK-Euro-Male-Pin/d...

In fact if that link works the same on your PC as mine, look at the "Frequently Bought Together" section .. that is both the bits you need.

Some of the Euro adapters (the bulky ones) won't fit properly into Swiss type sockets. Others will.

But it may also depend on the socket - some of the ones in business meetings rooms I've been in can be tricky.

So it depends - not much help getmecoat

OK - looks like the Swiss have some variance in their wall outlets!! Looks like you'll need to get a specific adapter?

Having said that, I've done several European trips now and managed fine with the cigar lighter socket plus a second (fused)12V socket wired direct from the battery on my Tuscan. I'd usually leave my 'phone charging o'night from one of them.

Safe journey! Nick

Just plug them in the fag lighter socket in the car.
Certainly the TVR Chimaera one is always on, and many other cars these days have a permanently live 12 volt socket.

This little baby helps, underneath the dash on the passenger side. Does the satnav and the phone charger. smile

In case anyone asks, the live feed comes from the fuel gauge (appropriate!) which is on the ignition circuit, co only works with the ignition on. God-send on long trips.

Hi all. we are now at Interlaken in Switzerland. All is well with the plugs. The hotel has given us two for free. The hotel we are in is called Hotel Seeburg. It has the most amazing views of Lake Brienz, and the mountains on the far shore. I have never seen anything so spectacular in my life.
I will post some pictures when we get home. Thanks for all your advice and help with this guys.
Dave.
