NEW MOT EMISSIONS RULES
Discussion
My Griff 500 has failed its MOT on emissions. I know this doesn't sound unusual but it is now with the new rules on MOT. There doesn't seem to be a way around it. Unfortunately mine has a complete bespoke system which now means replacing the whole system with a standard exhaust with cats the lot at £1600. Any suggestions welcome!!

Don’t think you’ve been allowed to mess about with the standard emission equipment the vehicle was type approved with for a long time..

The emissions standards the cars have to meet have not changed, in previous years a car that originally had a cat that’s been removed had to pass the tests to get a genuine pass. Without a cat fitted the later cat cars won’t pass a genuine test.
A visual check is also applied but most likely yours failed on the actaual emission test. Testers that will let this through are few and far between as they risk their livelihood.

Working in the motor trade it's getting harder with big brother watching you. dvsa could be round the corner on his laptop , firstly you do need a willing tester for the cost of a mot ticket not many will risk points against their licence I not saying it's not do able. speaking from experience at least book test for a Saturday enough said
If I had £1 for every thread I've seen on here and elsewhere about changes in emissions at MoT tests…..
Only diesels have had any changes in this regard, and even then it's to do with tampering with the DPFs etc, not the actual level of emissions:

What car have a more comprehensive article on it:

Some things have been removed, for example:
Checks for tyre correctly seated on the bead rim removed
Checks of tyre valves removed
Failure for fitment of a space-saver wheel removed

Diesel limits did change significantly, Ian, cars are now failing due to not achieving the newly applied VIN plate value, with some doubt that they would have done so even when new! Main culprits are pre 2008 VWs, with some plate values around 0.5m-1, where previously the limit was 1.5 m-1

I have seen 7 cars scrapped since May because of it; I'm pleased in some ways because IMO diesels are the Devil's work (and VW his Lieutenant) so the fewer on the road the better in my book, but you have to feel for the owners who have suffered from such a dramatic overnight shift of the goalposts.

Anyway, this forum should be about petrol, not 'heavy oil', so let's move on.

I think the new rule is that if it had a cat when new then it needs one now
Don't worry too much about rules until the USA begin to clean up their actProblem sorted by Colin at TVRSSW.
We have got our hands on a couple of the standard maniifolds/ cats and they actually fit to the rest of my bespoke exhaust. So am going to leave it like that so there is no messing at MOT time.
I now have a lovely pair of bespoke manifolds with no cats if someone wants them!!

That just leaves the rat chewed wiring loom to sort out now. Previous owner stored it in a barn!

I've been out of the fold for a couple of years now but there used to be several specialists who would "fit a cat, MOT the car then remove it again". I suspect what actually happened was they billed for two hours labour, then carried out option 2, as m4tti suggests. However, you're unlikely to find a MOT centre who'll do it, looking at your car history, you must be on first name terms with local TVR specialists explain your predicament and ask if they can help.

My BKD engined 2006 Golf has a plate value of 1.2. Tested last week correctly. Average of the last 3 tests was 0.30.Many TVRs are the worst polluters out there as lots have no cats, many stories of 'find a friendly tester' and so on, so this is a pot calling the kettle black
