Christmas in Madeira Again
Discussion
I want to have a TVR to drive on Madeira. This island is amazing, not just the incredible scenery, and wonderful food, but the exceptionally well maintained express ways and endless tunnels. I want to drive a TVR here, badly.
I think a Griff or Chimaera would be best, I wouldn't want my Cerb here as the visibility is a bit restrictive, and you simply don't need that outright performance. I think a soft-top would be ideal, that way you can really admire the incredible vistas.

It's some years since I spent Christmas in Madeira but still have vivid memories of sliding my Vauxhall Nova hire car around some of the cobbled roads up in the mountains, especially those that were damp. Did actually come to grief and buggered a tyre and wheel. Just swopped it for the spare and nothing more said!!
Not sure I would want to attack some of those roads in a Griff. Don't recall many straights only corners and more corners.Always thought Madeira Rally would be worth a look though.

The 44 mile long dual carriage express-way (VR1) in SE Madeira was completed in 2005, it includes 20 tunnels and is absolutely spectacular. The entire island has can be circumnavigated in 3 or 4 hours and every section of road is awe inspiring. Sure, the old roads are challenging, but that is half the fun. There are a few interesting cars here, there's even a Porsche club on the island. The most prevalent sports car seems to be the Z3, but I've also seen a couple of Caymans. A TVR would be really special, although I'm not quite sure how long you could remain under the radar.
Done Madeira several times now plus two at Xmas, going out on Xmas day. Driven the entire island and the tunnels are ace. You can stop and give the car a shower where the waterfalls run off the cliffs on to the roads at the north end so maybe best not in a Chim?
Great place, and do the afternoon tea thing at Reid's Palace on the terrace.

My GF just told me we'd have to sell the car to go to Reid's Palace, so that's not happening.
Really looking forward to our return trip this Easter though.

I've just returned from Madeira and I have to agree about the roads and tunnels.
During our week, there was a display of classic MGs in the centre of Funchal. All were lefties, immaculate and, bar one, Portuguese registered. The next day, an absolutely perfect lefty Healey 3000 was parked outside our hotel .... absolutely stunning and left me wanting it! Dream on ....
