I woke up, looked out of the window & it's a lovely day! Roof is already off..scratchchin so, the only question was where to?

In the end I settled on testing out the twisties in the Peak District. Twenty-five minutes later I'm on the Via Gelia. For those of you who don't know it, it is a fun ribbon of road which is either cliff or tree lined. (It is also heavily populated with eight wheelers, so wits are required!)

I started to notice significant tree debris in the road, so eased right up in anticipation of meeting something big round the next bend.

Suddenly...CRACK!!! and I see a bough the size of a tree falling from the sky. (about 8m long and maybe 15cm diameter...anyhoo, fecking big!)

I brake hard enough to smell the tyres, but bang, it hits me or I hit it. The impact was hard enough for both indicator repeaters to pop out of the wings. Tree cascades into the other carriageway. Not being a safe place to stop I pulled around the corner where a Volvo mega earth mover on a low loader was parked in the middle of the road. (Which was handy as I was able to stop the oncoming truck & advise of the problem in it's path)

Once I'd popped the repeaters back in the only damage I could find was a few scuffs & a busted number plate. But! Maybe if I had arrived on the scene 1/10th of a second earlier said tree could be embedded in my noddle. Or, if I had not heard the crack?

So, today is officially my lucky day & I'm now going to buy some lottery tickets.

Mosquitoes must be hard as nails where you live, that ones cracked your number plate wink

Seriously though I hope you got a contact or registration for the driver of the lorry. You were lucky but a young driver with less experience to read the conditions could just have ploughed into any debris or branch.
Not sure if I'm coming over all nanny state but feel the haulage company/driver must have a duty of care to other road users. If he was over wide the police would insist on an escort, as it is he was over tall and ended up nearly killing you!

I had quite a chat with him, and to be honest I felt sorry for him. I was more glad to be alive than worry too much about damage to the car!

I applaud your British devil may care attitude old man. I've always liked Jimmy Carr's comment about the warning triangle for falling rocks. It may as well say 'Stay Lucky'.

Things happen on the road. YES! you can make you're own luck but often, despite a good day, if your name's on it, ...it's yours.

I'm glad it wasn't a bad one but it would have been better if it hadn't happened at all.

Stay Lucky!
