Apparently the later cars had a cross bolted block and better crank-does anyone know the date or engine number from which this mod was made?

I dont think there is a set date. I Know the odd ones are cross bolted but as far as i`m aware the vast majority of 500`s were not cross bolted.

Get input from Spend, Dom at Powers or JE about cross bolting and get a different perspective. You'll understand that it isn't that crucial. Good balance of the complete assembly is though. The difference between the large journal vs small journal crank has also created some debate, as to whether it is more important to have the extra 'meat' on the crank or in the block. Again, a lot of this will depend on how much power and torque you will be putting through it.

As hinted at above, I am led to believe that the TVR 5 litre engine was externally balanced, thus leaving it exposed to the risk of breaking the crank under pressure.
V8 Developments internally balance their engines, reducing the risk substantially. There are quite a number of V8D 5 litre engines out there

My Griffith 500 was a 2000 car and was not cross-bolted and neither was my '94 Griffith.
My 450 Chimaera [also a 2000 car] is cross-bolted. Very few 500's are.

On the TVR forum it just means "that's the right answer". Positive response, no comment on, or slight to, any other post.

If you want to be certain of getting a cross bolted engine, go for a 450. They are all cross bolted.

May be worth noting that many 500s, (but apparently not all?), could be modified and cross bolted; dependent on the mains caps.

I have seen multiple opinions on the benefits vs cost vs disadvantages to doing this however.

It is pretty much universally accepted that full internal balancing is more critical.
I would say essential IMO.

Jack it up and look see the bottom of the engine block.
If cross bolted one finds the bolt heads on the outside of lower casing. Easy, mine is not, so what! biggrin

Well look at it another way - my 500 is 20 years old - it gets driven hard & has been totally reliable to date. While I'm sure cross bolting has its benefits the 500 engine isn't going to melt but is a subject the 450 owners like to extol frequently while I enjoy the higher output.....
