Higher rating XL run flat Pirelli tyres
Discussion
I need 4 new tyres on my 2017 BMW 320i touring (more pot hole damage) and the standard tyres are Pirelli P7 Cinturato 225 50 R17 94V run flats. After much thought I've decided to stay with the Pirelli's as apart from pot hole damage they've been pretty good (I've had the car from new).
I can get a good deal on some Pirelli P7 225 50 R17 98Y XL. These are obviously over spec which doesn't worry me too much, but I'm a bit worried the XL rating will result in a harsher ride due to the stiffer tyres. This would make my wife very happy has she has a dodgy back.
I'd appreciate any thoughts or experience anyone has had.
Thanks,
Terry
Not sure how much difference there really is, especially being a runflat which will already be stiffer.
But I'm sure the likes of an all season tyre will be softer and offer better comfort if that was an option for you. The likes of the Goodyear s a fairly modern option ?

You could try Hankook Ventus S1 EVO runflats. That is what i use, albeit on 225/45-18, and 255/40 - 18 on a 335d x drive.
I went down from 19" Pirelli to 18" Goodyear EfficientGrips, and now as they are wearing, moving to the 18" Hankooks. They are more comfortable than the Goodyears. All have been runflats

Thanks all for your input.
It seems that the standard 225/50R17 94V Pirelli run flats are difficult to get at the moment and the higher rated 98Y XL versions are widely available. Having spoken to my local BMW specialist and a couple of other people, they don't reckon I'd notice much difference. Unbelievably, I've only just noticed that the most recent tyre I had replaced due to pot hole damage (bloody essex and Suffolk roads) is a 98Y XL. So unknown to me,they fitted a different rated tyre on the same axle. Who'd have thought you need to check that the correct rated tyres are fitted.
Anyway, I didn't notice and difference when driving, so I'm going to bite the bullet and replace all 4 with the same.
