Took a 3year old car for its 1st mot and was given a bucket load of advisories on tyres

What’s the tread limit for this ?,

I know 1.6mm for minimum
But what is the limit for advisory’s assuming even tread, no damage or repairs etc…is it discretionary?

What is the advisory text on the MOT sheet? Without that we are all guessing. Could be close to wear limit, damage, cuts, perished….

What is the ACTUAL wording?

There's a thread in General Gassing titled "Ask an MOT tester anything", might be better asking in there.

I would assume discretionary, because the MOT Manual offers no guidance.

I guessed as much as it felt I was being offered an “up-sell prior to the Mot”
….or is it more like to avoid an advisory you need to spend 500 quid on tyres ?
( I felt it would put someone less savvy on the back foot and out of pocket)
which based on average mileage could last untill next mot… 3 years old car with 15k

There is a lot of notes on reasons to fail at the bottom of this page:

That's all fairly self explanatory isn't it? Your tyres are getting low on tread. There's still enough meat to pass an MOT, but be aware they will require replacing soon depending on your mileage use. Which is the whole idea of an advisory.

Lots of performance cars leaving the factory today with 6mm or less tyre tread …
I rotate generally and keep an eye on tread use ( habit from driving 25k per year back in the day )

Just surprised to see 3mm as an advisory as cannot believe in 40 years driving I’ve never delivered a car to a mot station without less tread…

They are just letting you know that your tyres tread depth is getting close to the legal limit especially at the edges.

ETA.
Don't forget that the general idea behind advisories is that if you do nothing they will likely be failures next year.

3mm would fall into this category for a lot of testers I would have thought, although perhaps just as many may just tell you rather than put it on the MOT.

You really needed clarification of that?

Overly eager to up-sell tester there. I 'd only advise if you'd hit the wear bars or the edges were actually bald.

When speaking to my MOT tester a couple of years ago, she said that anything less than 3mm she will advise on,

I've actually fallen foul of this.

I had suspension bushes that were advised. I said to the tester "oh, I better get those sorted then", his response "I wouldn't bother, they just look a little perished. Wait until they go and replace them then."

The next year, the suspension felt no different (it was a luxobarge, the final word in floppy rather than the epitomy of taught) but... One had torn and understandably it failed. "Can't believe you haven't replaced those bushes already, I advised them last year" said the tester hehe

If you hit the wear bars the tyre is right on the legal limit or below.

Agreed, I would have thought being at/below the wear bar would generally be a fail.

What other advisories were there in that bucket?

General advice is to replace tyres at 3mm tread for best wet performance. Would only disregard that advice for a fair weather toy, apparently tyres with less tread do better in the dry.

I’d just replace all 4 tyres asap.
