Hello pistonheads,

I wondered if anyone would be able to advise me about what happened to my car. I was notified by police that my car was hit by a car that they were chasing (possibly no insurance). I have not contacted my insurance provider yet, and my car is due for its MOT next week. Would this damage pass an MOT inspection, nothing is sticking out and no sharp edges. I also wanted to know if I could repair this myself with a hammer, I predict that my insurance premium will rise as a result of this, although it was not my fault, I have read about insurance companies raising premiums on hit and run accidents. Does anyone have an idea about how much this would cost to repair, or if I could do this myself somehow? eg paint touch up etc

Thank you so much for taking a look and helping me if you can

:-)

Is it the angle of the photo, or is that wheel not pointing straight.

I believe it is the angle of the photo, or the way I parked :-s

Nothing that should be a fail there.

Can you fix it with a hammer...? If you need to ask, the answer's probably no, unless you've never realised what an innately talented bodywork genius you are...

I'd not be surprised if that gets written off, tbh. Bumper, outer wing (big surgery), possibly doorskin, maybe some inner wing straightening. What's the value?

haha doh!

Its a 2016 reg, Petrol Chevrolet 1.2 litre Spark, value is about £1800 , maybe less. Its my first car, had it for just under a year, not sure if insurance would pay for the write off as the car was possibly hit by illegal driver :-/

2016 reg...?

If the other car was insured, that policy is paying.
If it wasn't, then it's either coming off your policy if you're fully comp, or there's the Motor Insurance Bureau's uninsured driver compensation scheme - https://www.mib.org.uk/making-a-claim/claiming-aga...

Its a second hand car that I have owned for one year (my first car) but is 2016 reg. The insurance website says its worth £1600 but it has never been written off previously and has 44,000 miles and full service history. If I even enquire with insurance about the situation I have heard that my premium will rise just because the car was hit by another vehicle. They believe that more people go onto having an accident of their own after these things happen? I'm not sure if I should report this and receive half of what I paid for a car I have had under 1 year and possibly pay a higher premium and lose my no claims discount when the car could pass its MOT. What would you advice? :-)

MOT failure - no. Write off - maybe based on value (if correct). Hammer it out yourself - if you can get to the dents from behind it may look better but you won't be able to do anything about the door yourself (unless you've trained in PDR).

Surely if it's a 2016 car, the MOT isn't due until 2019?

The door isn't too extreme, it might pop back out with a plunger, its above the wheel/petrol valve that worries me, is it damage that would cost over £300 to repair? I don't mind doing paint touch up myself if it would be possible

To repair properly? That wouldn't even cover painting and fitting the bumper...

To do that wing properly, the old wing is going to have to be cut off, a new one (are they even available, since Chevrolet are no longer in the UK?) welded on, then seam-sealed, sprayed, rust-proofed inside, the window replaced... Far more than a 6yo Spark is worth.

I think your choice is simple. If you don't want it recorded (bear in mind you'll be lying to insurers for the next five years, denying an incident happened which is on official record), then just live with it as is.

2011,that is why it's worth £1800.

Likely be written off I'd guess, buy it back,or retain ,drive it till it dies.

Thank you for all your help!

Would it be wise to allow my insurance company to trace the details. If this was a stolen car would the write off payout be void (and come from my policy instead). It also took place on the 29th September and I only noticed it yesterday(and the little piece of paper 'police memo' underneath my wind screen wiper). Could my case be cast away and premium raised by my insurance provider if I were to enquire with them?
