What's my car coated/finished with?
Discussion
Hi.
I bought a 10 month old car the other day and the shine and finish on it was lovely. The other day I noticed a bit of leaf stuck to the car so I removed it with my finger and left a slight smear, which I tried to rub off with a cloth but it just seemed to smear it further. Tried again today and it seems like it's some sort of coating on the car, that presumably the dealer has put on to make it all new and shiny, and when it's wiped it appears it's this finish that is streaking. Can't see a fingerprint spreading that much. Any ideas what this could be and any suggestions how I can make the smear, I have presumably created in the finish, disappear. its like a layer of something that looks nice until it is disturbed. Any other cars I've had that are waxed you can brush lightly with the back of a finger for example and feel it silky smooth and not leave a mark. If I try that with this car it will leave a drag mark. Thanks for any insight.

Welcome to PH.
I’m guessing the dealer has done what most dealers do to get cars shiny, use an all-in-one filler polish, but applied with a flawed procedure, leaving a volatile layer, that’s reacting in this strange way. Another procedure might have been a filler heavy oily glaze, topped off with something unsuitable like a sealant, when they should have used a wax. Spoken to the dealer yet?
