My car got ‘egged’ a few weeks back and due to work I did not see this until a week ago. It now looks like the egg from heat has caused damage to the clear coat and possible paint on the bonnet.

Can people advise on options here? I understand silver is hard to blend so want to limit paint if possible but most likely only option.

Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert on egg removal, but I do paint cars for a living.

I'd try as much as I can to remove it asap before any further chemical etching can take place, what have you tried so far? The easiest is probably to mix up a bucket of warm soapy water with some white vinegar, soak a tea towel or similar and lay it over the mark for 10 mins keeping the cloth damp to soften it up and try to remove as much of the stain as possible. You might have to do it a couple of times to get it soft enough?

Other than that try some harsher chemicals, bug, glue and tar type removers, a clay bar etc.

If that fails the next step is either some P2000 or P3000 sandpaper followed by a heavy cut compound but be careful as you are taking lacquer off with this step.

Ultimately it either needs removing from elbow grease and chemicals, or mechanical removal of the lacquer using a very fine grit abrasive, hoping its only etched the surface and leaves some unaffected paint below.

If not, on a bonnet, unfortunately its a respray of the whole bonnet.

Thanks for the advice, it’s full on eaten into the clear coat. The paint might be ok underneath but i don’t want to damage further.
Tried to add a closer picture below, if anyone knows a good paint shop in Newcastle as well if would be appreciated.

One of them things, thanks for the advice though, very much appreciated.

I just wanted to make sure before I started contacting places that it was 100% not salvageable in anyway.

Strange an egg would do that, any explanation as to why?
Just generally interested, I know bird crap is horrific and causes a lot of issues.

Birds messed up the roof on our old Golf, tried to polish one mark out, failed, all the others disappeared in the sun, except the one I messed with.

Just get it off as soon as you can.

My understanding (could be wrong) is that the egg becomes more acidic due to baking in the sun etc. and then the fact I ran the car thinking I had cleaned it all off. The reaction is then what you see which is the clear coat breaking up.

Lesson learned and hopefully it saves someone else in the future. As said above, as soon as you notice just get it off.

My car had been left about two weeks another car was done and the guy said it was just kids randomly going around throwing them at parked cars.

I had a car hit by an egg as I was driving along at about 40mph. I cleaned it off when I got home 10 minutes later.

The impact causes the egg shell to fragment like a grenade and shatter into tiny pieces which then digs into the softer paintwork causing the micro hazing. Realistically it's a smart repair or panel repaint.

Paint stripper manufacturers are missing a trick then, egg based nitromors would be a winner judging by this smile
Bird poo is because it contains ammonia and that's what eats into the paint, always wash it off asap

Maybe just buy a new bonnet in the same colour, might work out cheaper?

Yup, it looks like the car has been hit by shotgun pellets. Eggs do some pretty nasty damage to paintwork, it’s not the innocent laugh some think it is.
