Are they legal for competition?
Similarly, 3 point harnesses with a recoil type rear connection so you can move about like a normal seatbelt but it lock (hopefully) in an accident?

The blue book is very specific about the design, materials and construction. You would have to check the blue book to be sure but from memory it specifies the grade of steel, it has to be cold drawn seamless tube, and the supplier has to comply with specified quality control standards. This is in addition to all the design restrictions.

That's kind of what I thought although my Blue Book is a couple of years old.
Why are there people selling aluminium roll cages and more so, who's buying them?
Can't see the point of a cosmetic roll cage, but there again that's my age, what's the point of neon screen washers....

The inertia reel harnesses are not FIA approved (I've got some safety devices ones) so IIRC they are not allowed for regs specifying harnesses, they just hold you a lot more securely than a regular 3 point belt.

Aluminium cages used to be legal but got banned. People are selling them to be used in road cars / track day cars where something is better than nothing.

Inertia reel 3 point full harnesses are better than a standard belt but not in the same league as an FiA aproved harness.

Thanks, well at least that got the forum started. If it's that "cool", I think I'll go out now and paint a roll cage silhouette on the rear windows. That'll help me in an accident.
Really can't see why anyone would buy something like that and an alli rear cage for a mini is £200, and put their faith in it when it'll just collapse.
Maybe I'm just not into marketing!
