With the VED getting so phenomenally expensive, I'm seriously wondering if it is time to ditch my current moderns and go to a tax and MoT free old car?

Things I would consider are an MGB, Scimitar, Capri 2.8, Golf GTi, Stuff that would easily keep up with the flow, not be too expensive on juice and more importantly, be fun to drive and easy to fix.

What other 'Pistonhead' cars would others consider?

Ford Sierra, Vauxhall Cavalier.

Edit; Didn't see the 'Pistonheads' bit, so make it a Sierra XR4x4/4i or GLSi, Cavalier SRi.

I would just pay the VED as any old car will no doubt throw a bill that costs more than that eventually

If I had to pick, it would be a Bentley turbo R or a 911

It’d rot around itself in winter frown

I’d go Golf GTI, or 205 GTI.

I don't need a car daily but if I had a house with a driveway so I was guaranteed a parking spot I would use my 66 Impala a lot more often. I am paranoid about getting home in Edinburgh after 6.30 pm and not finding a park big enough.

I'm daily driving a 1989 Volvo 740, (so I have another 4/5 years till free tax, but the early ones are tax exempt now. I'm still going to get it MOTd every year).

Simple to maintain and work on, and powered by, as someone else on here said, "the Keith Richards of engines".
(Get a turbocharged one to fill the PH bit)

More generally, do you have any mechanical know-how? You'd probably regret it if you were paying someone else to maintain and fix any little niggles.

Yep, it's a balance. Similarly, at the other end of the scale, you could get something ridiculously powerful with just a £180 VED but the cost difference might be £30k so you would be better off just paying £750 VED (or whatever it is).

I think a W124 would be my choice. Couple of years too early to get one of the better engines though.

I was taking 40 years as a rough number. The 164 started in 1987, so 38 years. Maybe the 155 is pushing it a bit, I had thought they were around in the late 80s but looking it up, no they weren't. Was trying to dredge up some Alfa or other which might fall under the easy to fix condition... not an easy task... hehe

All cars from 40 years ago will be crap as a daily. No exception.

Would rather get a bus, more reliable at least.

Is this "40 year old cars I'd like to own" or "40 year old cars capable of being daily driven today". confused

I'd love another 480 but wouldn't think of daily driving one, they were bad enough at half the age.

Likewise I briefly had an Alfa 33 Quadrofoglio Verde pass through my hands. I'd like a decent one but I've never seen anything like it before or since in terms of rust so daily driving it would be out of the question.

I've had a couple of 2.9 Sierra XR4x4's over the years, and they weren't great on fuel to be fair, but you didn't seem to notice it much though, because petrol was so much cheaper 30 years ago! I'd love to go back to those times in some ways now.
