As part of a hefty change of direction / attempt to actually make money, the company i work for has laid off the 2 most senior developers, which makes me, with my one year out of uni the most senior, with 2 lowly minions (school leaver and an older person who is a little slow to adapt to new tech). This leaves me with serious doubts as to the companies future.

btw, before i go on, im a software developer, currently working in c# / .net stuff.

I was considering leaving previously due to plenty of other issues with the company and some more life-goalsy type reasons, with this latest development im left wondering whether or not to hasten or postpone this.

Consulting my business advisor aka dad, he doesnt think people will be doing much hiring now until februaryish. Do I see how these new ideas at the business work out and decide then? or do i go all out to find a new place now?

Background info, in case it helps. im paid about 2/3 industry average for my area of the country, I commute 40 miles a day to a freezing office where im faced with a series of impossible tasks with no time to do them in. We have no design process, we have no structured review process, management tend to be very stressed and throwing stuff is not unheard of. The boss sometimes appears to tell the truth, other times hes a huge liar. Im now unable to tell which!

As a small aside to help me figure out if any of what he was saying today was a lie, values on the following cars would be appreciated (his lies travel in packs!)

04 Merc A class diesel
03 Merc C class estate, i think a 220? maybe...
02 Merc C class diesel saloon
04 Merc E class estate, possibly a 240..

Two words-

Run away.

10 years ago my boss, his boss and 25% of the sales team closest to the Co.'s HQ left within 4 months of each other, right before the rest of us were made redundant.

Leverage your position for more money now, today, to be included in this weeks pay. Or figure the tosser is not going to do it at all.

****Edit****
Not trying to sound down, just want you to be able to see outside the work rut you are in. Try to talk to someone outside the Co. who knows about your situation, a trusted developer friend or a customer even, about what is happening. Get the money for the work performed.

hope things work out.

no probs. I am well aware of the position im in I chose this position knowing its shortcomings because it gave me the chance to move out from home, and it let me learn the current popular languages and tools.

Thanks for the advice

Chris,

I've got two kids in IT/dev work, one worked for one of the largest "dot bomb"s ever. 60-70 hr. weeks, all weekend, 24/7 on-call. Terrible stuff to see your kid doing- a good, dedicated and thorough job- for a rotten Co.

Whatever you do, when you decide it is over, walk away having done your best, not half-best.

Even if he deserves it.
// Dad rant over//

All the best,

Dave
